Julie- Pastel Portrait- Ken Tiessen
This is Julie from last night- the image size is about 10"w x 12"h- most of the work done in about 2 hours. I haven't worked from life in a few weeks, so it was good to be back!

Beautiful Ken! I always struggle with the makeup on some of our sitters- you have handled this so well!

Lovely as usual Ken. I love the way you handle the planes of the face... confident work.

I absolutely adore your style! It's so easy to recognize your work as yours. This one turned out very lovely again.

I enjoyed seeing your pastel piece. Was this from a drawing session? What kind of paper (or surface) did you use?

Hi Bethany! Thanks! She was wearing the full complement which was especially nice around the eyes, but a bit less 'real' in places like the cheeks.

Hi Oliver! Thank you- A big focus for me is value, light, color, and form so I appreciate your comment.
Hi Fuchur! That feels very good, so Thanks. Loomis said we all already have a 'style' and it only needs development. I appreciate your nice words!

Hi James- Thank you- it is from an evening group that I run at the Studio each Tuesday evening from 6-9pm. It works out to about 2.5 hours with breaks and we usually don't start until 6:15 or so with setup, making it shorter. The surface is the smooth side of Canson Mi-Tientes (Sepia color) which I've used for a long time, partly out of habit, and much of my work is on some sort of toned ground (other nice colors are Sand and a dark brown). Thanks for asking! You're fortunate to live near St. George- it is a great landscape out there.

Thank you, dunstonpaper! I appreciate it! The more I know, the more I know I don't know about art (and life too).
