Explosives Experts

16 x 20, pastel on board. I had a color fix that needed satisfying. Always interested in how people like this kind of painting (or not). cc welcome. Thanks for the look.

Re: Explosives Experts

Excellently descriptive title Ron! Its almost like dusty flames are leaping from the exploding horse. This is really cool!

Re: Explosives Experts

Ron, This is great. It really says action. The composition and colors really work well.

This is a very picky thing but the shadow in the lower right might look better if it had a little more mass. There are 3 shadow masses–the horse & rider, the judge and that shadow in the corner. Right now that shadow is too small to be a player in the composition. If it were bigger I think it would give the composition a little more rhythm.

I only mention that because everything else is so perfect.

Re: Explosives Experts

Thanks everyone, appreciate your comments! This kind of painting is a lot of fun...not so picky about making things look "real"

Jim- Thanks. That area is disconnected. If I make that shadow area too big it may take away from the height of the horses jump... so perhaps I should connect it slightly with the other shadows? I will play around with it in photoshop and see.

Re: Explosives Experts

Would never have noticed the shadow - I think you're right that if it were larger/closer that the horse would seem closer to the ground.
Love this piece!

Re: Explosives Experts

Linda- thanks a bunch!

Ok, made a few changes. Removed lower right shadow, expanded shadow in lower left. Removed greenish color from dust, just did not fit rest of color scheme. Added some reflected light here and there and just regular fiddling.

Thanks again to everyone.

Perfect 10s all around! I think these are your best; you really have a style emerging. I'm awaiting your news about the plans in the works that you mentioned. . . .
