Drawing A Black Cat.
Hello everyone, I'm wanting to draw my recently passed away black cat. I havent been able to do it so far, but now feel strong enough to approach it. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on how to go about it. Shanti had a very subtle ginger colour in some parts of her fur but she was mainly black. I was wondering how to create the black fur to make it realistic. I appreciate any tips anyone can give and am very greatful. Pauline

Re: Back again ....
Hi Pauline .. welcome to D&S. Your question really ought to have been in a thread of it's own, but I'll take a stab at it.
The only way to see white fur on white paper is through the shadows. Conversely the only way to see black fur on paper is through the highlights. Edges are also critical. While I've never done a black animal, I have done areas that are quite black. Here are some examples .. you can see the slightly highlighted hairs that give form within the black areas. It doesn't take many, but if they are missing it will just be a black hole.

Oh, Ken, Jan...hope the muse will be back soon.....
I draw all the time...mostly miserably faililing...but I am still trying....I am thinking about pastels but nothing is easy when one is a perfectionist....
Hope you will be soon doing something that you will enjoy!!!!

Re: Back again ....
Other way around for me... I'm drawing and painting for the first tome in ages and really enjoying it!
Ken, Bren and Jan, You'll all get your mojos back soon!
Luicre - go for the pastels! I find dabbling in the dust really therapeutic!

Yes,Gerri working with pastels it is therapeutic...
Ken you can always make those gorgeous boxes that you have done on the past....what matters , I guess, it`s to find some craft that makes you happy .
Good luck, Ken!
Bren, Jan... you will get back to whatever inspires you both.... it could be anything...
Saludos

Re: Back again ....
Oh Ken, I think we all loose it occasionally. I usually get my hubby moaning 'when's that on the easel going to be finished ... it's been sat there collecting dust for months!'
We'll still be here for when it comes back .

Still got that last eye to finish on mine as well . I've tried putting my pencils next to the drawing in the evening hoping it will be done when I wake up - hasn't happened yet . Maybe one day
