Re: Back again ....
I never mind answering questions in my threads .. however useful the answer might be. I think the trick to darks is knowing balance. A pupil is almost invariably black black black! because it does not reflect any light so that's a good place for the darkest charcoal/carbon you can get. But there is a risk in copying a photo too closely because the camera tends to blacken shadows too much. Unless it's cave dark, shadows still have some light and hence form within. As an artist you may or may not wish to show that form or a different degree of form perhaps .. but there is when the choice as to how much charcoal to use comes into play ... and where a lot of practice is needed. Different types of charcoal are going to give you different degrees of black and experimentation is the only way to find out the answers. Just remember that charcoal must go down first and graphite second ... it won't work the other way around.
For me, I always go over everything with graphite to even up the reflective characteristics of the drawing. To me it's very much like putting varnish on an oil painting.
BTW - forgive me for asking but I have been wondering about this ... I shall try to get over my shyness here and ask because Katie wants to know ... ShinyShimmy ... is your behind shiny? Don't blame me! Katie MADE me do it .. she's a bad, bad girl.

Re: Back again ....
Hahahahaa! I've only just read this. You guys are funny.
Well..... I do exfoliate every day I could upload a pic?
But seriously...
The real reason I chose this name was because my horse's name is Shimmy, and sadly I've just given him away to a friend because of personal problems. God, I miss him, I had him since he was a foal and I trained him to ride, but anyway.... and the 'Shiny' part is because of the frustrating shine with graphite LOL... so now I am known as ShinyShimmy..
but embarrassingly, you guys are going to always remember me now as ShinyButt lolololol
I can take it

KEN! I just stopped into the D&S to see what's happening over in this city ... and I see you've picked up the pencils again! I'm so happy for you
Me too cause now I get to learn more from you
This is already looking fantastic with the amount of detail you accomplish! I love the eye!!!!!
Enjoyed reading all the banter too! I've been spending a lot of my time in the A & W and I've been experimenting with pastels but always return to my graphite

Thank you Artby. I try to stick to the subject at hand in my Civil War thread .. but other threads tend to be somewhat .. um .. .looser. I'm glad you find something here to enjoy.
