LOL! Yes, they are all real and I own all of them. No I'm not a store owner, I'm just nuts. I do keep them all stored carefully, but these pictures were taken over a long period as I purchased each set.

Aha...they are just for show then....you don't actually use them? A true collector!

(I've seen his beautiful paintings but don't know which mediums they are!)

I've been procrastinating about buying a custom 90pc Ludwig set for a while now (I even have an Excel Spreadsheet listing exactly what I already have, and what I want to add...... not too organized....), you just gave me the justification....... If you have that many, well, then it's okay for me to just add a few more to my meager collection of 1500....... you put me to shame Jason!

An Excel spreadsheet! LOVE IT! I have color charts but I just keep them in a three ring binder.

Until I really started adding it up, I guess I didn't realize how many I had! I'm absolutely certain I don't need any more! At least until June.

Re: Yes, You CAN Have Too Many Pastels!!!

OMG Jason!!! You seriously have a store! Do you have these sets incorporated together somehow? I have full sets of Sennies, Giraults, Mount Visions, and Pans. I put the full set of Giraults in a backpack Heilman, and also have some in my medium Heilman. The Sennies are in their wood frame boxes in the drawer of my flat file. I have been incorporating all kinds of loose Unisons, Schminkes, some TL's, and my new Mount Visions into 4 cookie sheets in the top drawer of my flat file, in addition to putting the MV's into boxes for my Soltek easel. Like Phil said, I have to have things organized by hue, value and chroma to be able to work efficiently, and this incorporating phase has taken way more time than I thought. Unlike Chris, I do not have an Excel spreadsheet, but I do have the HueChroVal book, and that has been very helpful. I also purchased the TL handmade color charts and I keep track of my TL's there. I also break my pastels with the exception of my TL's.

Jason

I'm drooling. I'm seriously drooling. If I get city housing where my rent's only 30% of my income, someday my room will look like this. And I will be living in a bunk bed over a pastel storage cabinet with a table.

I too sometimes keep them in their native boxes because they're a bit easier to keep organized that way - when I want a particular texture I can grab that box. When I want to paint I rotate what box comes out.

Unisons 72 and Winsor-Newton 200 are the ones living in their native boxes along with 27 Girault (landscape plus red and violet), 30 Mungyo Gallery hand rolled, 48 Mungyo Gallery squares and all the different sets of hard pastels I brought with - Cretacolor, Mungyo Gallery Semi-Hard, 24 color Conte. Also now thanks to a Swap Shop buy, three little six color packs of Senneliers in Floral, Landscape and Light tones. Together those three are a cool little palette for painting in the park. I might bring them out on plein air sometime, just put those little boxes in the bag. Oh, and a 14 color Terry Ludwig mystery box that's an interesting small palette of its own.

I want that Roche half stick set so much I can taste it. Not yours, I'd be happy enough to order my own from fineartstore. I need to start selling some paintings and get my boxes from Arkansas so I can buy supplies again.

Yeah I keep the sets together by brand mostly for texture too. That way I can get out progressively softer sets as the painting moves forward. Although I do have a nice studio, I don't have enough table top surface to spread them all out at once.

Robert, I was under the impression that you had ordered the half stick Roche discovery set. I seem to remember you saying you got one. Maybe I'm mixing you up with someone else? I figured for $99, I'd give 'em a whirl. Personally I think they are nice but not worth the price for the full sticks.

Re: Yes, You CAN Have Too Many Pastels!!!

I sorted my complete set of Mount Visions according to the values listed on their website - looks pretty good to me. Has anyone ever done that? Is it accurate? I did the initial sort without the website and was off on about half.

I didn't know MV had their values listed on the website. I'm almost done sorting mine - three more boxes to go. I'll have to check it out. Thanks Xeno!!

hello
the variables of brands/palettes seem to have grown exponentially over the past decade or so ,
and there is still that one colour/stick ...

Re: Yes, You CAN Have Too Many Pastels!!!

Naw, I planned for it. I have some pieces that a friend sent me to try and that convinced me I want to order the $99 Discovery set. I just don't have the money yet. Need to get some of my boxes from Arkansas first before I get anything new. I've got so much sunk into supplies I bought over the past five years that I need to do something about that first - even if I take some of them apart and put some of the stuff in the Swap Shop to pay for the rest of the boxes to come and then put it into new pastels.

Which I might do considering that I'm much more into pastels than colored pencils now.

Re: Yes, You CAN Have Too Many Pastels!!!

i have the Toto bobo mask from Paula. i just messaged her and she didn't have any at that time but as soon as she got some in she sent one to me. You can cut them to fit your face but be wise and make sure you don't cut them too much1 Mine is almost too small now but it still works well. my friend whom i worked with last year would give me grief about wearing it but she worked flat and would bang the board vertically on the floor (on newspaper), and the dust would fly. I put the air purifier right next to her. We worked on either side of the couch with a table of the pastels in between us. I worked on an easel and she worked on her lap. She also is the messiest painter I have ever known. She gets it on everything and it doesn't matter what medium she is using at the time! Now that I paint mostly on my own the dust is much less and I have the air purifier on and if need be wear a mask as well.

I have to get many of my pastels arragned in some kind of trays still. Most of the Ludwigs and Great Americans and some others are in their boxes and it is a hassle as I don't have a big enough table to hold them all at once. i have the big dakota box and it is filled and arranged by color and value. I keep that on one side and the boxes on the other. It's a real challenge to use a watercolor underpainting as I then have to get out my big watercolor palette to do that and have to make room at the table. i need a new table that is bigger and also trays for the pastels so they can be arranged by color and value. Sandy Byers trays look very tempting!
