Re: Yes, You CAN Have Too Many Pastels!!!
Oh, and I just ask for this stuff for Christmas for the most part, and my hubby is so HAPPY to give me art supplies (as opposed to my asking for expensive jewelry that there is no way in the world he is going to buy for me :-)). And then sometimes I just order stuff if I need it, like paper or brushes and stuff, and he doesn't really care about that. I pay the bills so he really doesn't see any of it until tax time, and this year he didn't even go through the credit card bill for charitable deductions, I did, so he didn't even know! Although when I showed him what I had been doing with the new MV set he had given me for Christmas and all of the organizing by value and color and everything, he said - I think you have enough pastels now, right? And I did agree with him.

Gee whiz, is that more than 10?
If I showed you photos of all my pastels you'd probably faint. I justify it by reminding myself that pastel makers have children that need food and shelter.

Yes JPQ we have an abundance of riches here in the US as far as access to many different kinds of pastels. It can be a blessing and a curse for those who have no self control!! You can do beautiful work with a range of 200 pastels - especially the Sennies and the Schminkes as they have beautiful color and softness.

Art supplies pay for themselves, especially good artist grade ones. As soon as I sell a painting, whatever new set I used to paint it is justified. It's cost effective. It keeps me happy to rotate which pastels I'm using.
I've got multiple general assortment sets in different brands, each with a different character, texture, favorite paper, favorite combinations. Exploring those and rotating which ones I use on a given painting keeps me excited and interested even if I'm painting the same subject again and again. So there's some good reasons why to invest in lots of different pastels.

Hmmm- I feel I need a good faint. So photo(s) Please, Jason!!
I´m sure, I don´t have to many pastels, anyway there´s no time/place to do anything wiht them at the moment... sigh.... my table is covered with an old offwhite "underwallpaper" and my son (19 months) enjoys his 5 minutes of "painting" evry day.. He does really nice zigzagging with his colours . Never too early to start painting.
Ok back again- please indulge me and post pictures for me "AIW" (Addict in withdrawal) save me from the shivering!!

Re: Yes, You CAN Have Too Many Pastels!!!
I have 1200 sticks in my box which is not too many IF they are organized by hue value and chroma(which they are). Even with that, I have trouble finding the exact color I for each situation so I need more "in-betweens". I don't have any trouble with indecision since I know the exact color I want. So, I am trying to figure out what my next expansion plan will be (a bigger box?, add-on boxes?).
The hassle with over 1000 sticks is the time it takes to sort them. Only when they are organized can you get the most out of that many sticks. At some point, it gets too much to handle, too much time to sort, too many redundant colors to eliminate. I haven't come close to reaching that point yet, but I could see it start being a problem at 1800 sticks or so.

Vero: OK you asked for it!
Whenever I buy a set of new pastels I always try to photograph it for documentation before they get used too much. These photos aren't current, but I do keep most of the brands separated in their own boxes...especially the softer ones. The last picture shows the Roche half sticks which I just got two weeks ago. Enjoy...

Re: Yes, You CAN Have Too Many Pastels!!!
Jason...so...no hard pastels then? I actually don't feel so bad about my pastels now...have a few left to catch up on you though! And I have some Daler-Rowney...though I see you have Blicks...reputedly Daler-Rowney origin! PS and some Art Spectrums some loose plus a box of 20 - definitely a different colour spectrum - but useful just the same.

Re: Yes, You CAN Have Too Many Pastels!!!
Well Jason, you have succeeded in convincing me that I really don't have that many pastels (and I thought I was a bit overloaded........., not so much when I look at what you have!). I've been feeling guilty about wanting a custom 90pc set of Ludwigs, but you've completely made me feel like I "need" them . I won't feel at all guilty about buying them now that I've seen what you have - I have a measly 1400-1500 sticks, your collection far exceeds that!
Georgous pastels, an art supply addict's paradise. I think you must have just about every brand. One that you are missing is Art Spectrum. They're a great one, I think you should add them to your mix, then your set will be complete ! I'm sure there are colors in the Art Spectrum brand that won't be duplicates, they have some really unique colors! I, on the other hand, will buy me some more Ludwigs in the near future. That custom set is really calling me...... I have all the numbers listed, I know what I want, all I have to do is call......

Jason, I am so speechless!!! Your photos are beautiful and clearly you take good care of them! Are you a pastel store owner? How do you get to have so many? Thank you for these photos! This is real, right? You really own all these? You must be so proud of your beautiful collections!!!

I've inspired you to buy more Chris? Why thank you! My work here is done...
Deirdre: Yes, I don't have a ton of hard pastels compared to the soft ones, but that second to last box where they're all mixed together is mostly harder pastels...there is a full set of Cretacolors in there as well as a bunch of Yarkas, some NuPastels, a 45 set of Rembrandts and a few Winsor & Newtons. The Yarkas I have are fairly hard and are the old original ones before they were acquired by Richeson (I've never tried the current version). I bought those waaaay back in like 1995? They are student grade but came in a set of 120 for I think around $60 at the time. They do have some very interesting muted shades. I still haven't used them all up. I LOVE my Blick pastels! I think they are made by Daler-Rowney and for half the price! I got them when Blick had a 20% off sale so only paid $209 for the full set of 180.
