Re: Watercolour paper poll

Fabriano Artistico 140 lb CP Natural White for me is the most beautiful to paint on as long as I apply the paint and leave it alone the results are so clear and fresh. However, it does not seem to take many layers and keep the freshness also I find that it is not suitable for very wet techniques, is it me or does anyone else find the same.

Re: Watercolour paper poll

I agree that Fabriano Artistico is a beautiful surface to paint on. The paint just flows....

I also agree that it is not as great if you are using very wet techniques... I mean really wet..... wet-into-wet..... with lots of water... For that, I reach for a sheet of Arches....

and that's why I have a supply of both Fabriano Artistico and Arches

Re: Watercolour paper poll

I like the SW 200# for things I don't worry about correcting, but since I'm working toward more portrait work, Arches is definitely more durable. I love their hot press for detail paintings. You can't do the sweeping washes like the CP, but it is very forgiving.

I recently got a sample pack from Cheap Joes which has Fabriano, Arches, SW and Kilimanjaro. I look forward to trying the ones I haven't used yet. Many professional artists seem to like Kilimanjaro.

The number stopped dead at 70. Is that how many members there are? I was hoping to get a broader spectrum with more specifics in the comments, but there is a lot of info here. Thanks!

PS: Is there some kind of gate on polls? I didn't set any.

Maybe the other people here have not time to vote because they are busy painting on other brands

Re: Watercolour paper poll

I'm a little confused as I could be wrong, but it seems to me that there are different kinds of many of these brands (like also there are different ones of Canson too that I have seen other than Montval).

I find that while I may like one type from a certain manufacturer/company does not mean that I enjoy all the watercolor papers from that brands as a whole.

I put Canson Montval because (I might be wrong) it is the only one they make that people consider artist grade. I tried to make all the selections artist grade.

Re: Watercolour paper poll

I can't really fill out the poll because I like Arches so much better than the few other brands I have tried. I do use Canson Montval for Acrylics. An instructor used it for Acrylic class he taught and I liked it for Acrylics. I was going to say I have enough paper for a few years so I probably wont try another brand soon, but maybe I will see how much the trial pack is at Cheap Joe's.

I should have taken that into consideration, sorry! I do love these polls though, I don't see a better way to find out what everyone is using! I kind of thought it was up to a choice of three when I posted originally.

Re: Watercolour paper poll

Unfortunately, you can't design the perfect poll.

If we had only been able to choose one brand of paper, I would have had a problem because I like Arches and Fabriano Artistico equally... but for different types of paintings.

I think polls are interesting and I always enjoy reading people's comments about their choice(s). But many people don't participate in any of the polls - which is fine... their choice.

I think your poll got a good response.

Actually Montval is Canson's student grade. Their Foundation and XL lines are essentially sub-student grade (what I call scholastic, ie for little kids grinding through 100 pages a day with little concern for quality).
Their artist grade line is called Canson 100, meaning 100% cotton. It's the one that's cold press on one side and rough press on the other.
