The Chase
'The Chase' - Cheetah & Baby Gazelle.
Hi everyone, this is a commission I recently finished. It's oil on canvas size 24"x36". The customer said they liked the idea of a hunt in action and so I spent a while researching reference photos and knew straight away when I had found 'the one'. After contacting the photographer for permission he very kindly let me use his photo as reference.
I know the subject matter might not be to everyone's taste, but I just loved the action and intensity in the photo and really admire how a photographer can capture that kind of image.
I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts, thanks for looking!

Re: The Chase
Wonderful work. I like all the detail.
Looked at your web site.
You must wear out a lot of those little brushes putting in every hair.
That's why I switched to colored pencil.

Re: The Chase
It certainly is not to my taste. I always shut my eyes and plug my ears when there is anything like a 'kill' but I know that this is an essential part of the survival of wonderful species of animal and I take my hat off to you for tackling a difficult subject. This is stunningly painted with wonderful attention to detail. I do feel, however that the cat is looking past the prey rather than at it. The eyes need to be more focused on the actual antelope. Just MHO. By the way, apart from the animals , the background and grasses are simply beautiful.

I like this a lot! These two look alive, as if they are going to run away. The amount of action that you've created in this piece is amazing and inspiring. The client must be thrilled!

BTW I checked out your site, and am now a big admirer of your work.

Excellent work here and on your web site. What are your preferred brushes? I just started oil painting and love the soft look of your work.

Wow, that's great work! I love it. It doesn't bother me, cheetahs have to eat too!

Re: The Chase
Love it Rachel. Very much to my taste because the result is in question. We don't know who wins and that creates the talking point that this art would generate. On top of that, it's as gorgeous as your usual work which is always great to see!!

Re: The Chase
Thanks very much I've enjoyed reading all of your comments! Chammi I appreciate your thoughts, I knew there would be a mixed reaction to the subject matter.
Patrick I like the point you raised, the fate of the baby gazelle isn't set in stone. On average cheetahs have a hunting success rate of around 50%, if they fail to make a catch quickly they will give up. So this little guy may well have got away
Thanks Crias, some of the brushes I use are Cotman sizes 0-3 for the detail. Recently though I bought a multipack of 12 brushes for just £2.99 which work great, the make is Farrel & Gold. Plus another set of 4 Boldmere brushes for £1.99. I like a bargain!

Re: The Chase
I too am not into the killing end but know it has to happen to survive. BUT this painting is done so beautifully that for a second you forget what is going on and just see the beauty in it. For me anyway. Every detail you have put into it enriches the rest of what is there. I also like the suspense it gives the viewer. Does it make the kill or doesnt it. Love your site , another treat for the eyes to behold.

I am a fan of Big Cats Diary - and can honestly say - Wow did you capture that scene or what?! Sometimes they DO get away ... your piece is really just stunning - and the dirt flying up looks perfect, adds a huge injection of motion

Re: The Chase
Your painting is very good so is the action I totally agree it is nature but it is the side I do not like about it. I guess some people do or are indifferent about it no big discussion over it it ll never end
I think you're a very talented artist
