WDE 4_13 Japnese Lantern

From this weekend's drawing event, I chose the Japanese Lantern and decided I would try to make it a night scene.

8 by 10 inches, Oil Pastel on gessoed hardboard, Gray Pas Specialists, all blending done with paper stumps. The white photographed brighter than IRL.

I did try to suggest a light source within the lantern.

I guess I should call this a WIP. I see a couple of touch ups that need to be done. The right leg needs rounding and some shadowing from the reed passing in front of the lantern.

Also my camera brighten the whites more tha IRL.

Almost forgot. About four hours total time over two nights. The oil pastels got a bit juicy and I let the background setup overnight so I could put in some lighter texture.

Suggestions for improvement welcome.

Beautiful! Making it a night scene gave it a rich, mysterious atmosphere. The rock it's sitting on is floating a bit, maybe extend that out a little to the viewers right. I really like it!

I love it! It seems so mysterious and makes me feel like something's about to come out of the darkness.

Re: WDE 4_13 Japnese Lantern

I had a couple of hours this afternoon to tweak this painting. Unless someone points out something that is glaring and embarassing, I'll call this finished.

Thank you Signchidk, Deano, Helen, Kurlie, EP, and BJC.
