What's So Cute About That New Baby, Anyway?
This is my latest colored pencil on dark brown paper.
It's Brutus, my niece's boxer. We had traveled down to Florida from Philly to see our brand new grand-nephew. Took lots of pictures of the baby, much oohing and aahhing, and then I turned around and there was pitiful Brutus pouting in the chair, being ignored.
I am letting this rest a few days before I look at it again, so if any of you have some improvements you can suggest, I might be able to do them (if I have any tooth left on the paper, lol!)

Poor Brutus! At least somebody paid him a bit of attention...very nice portrait, Robin.

Aww, how cute! What an understanding dog, though. At least he wasn't jumping all over the place and interrupting the special occasion!

Corr he looks so unhappy, probably lost his bone or couldn't find a friendly tree nearby!
Seriously though you have done a remarkable job on this and when you decide to come back to it in a few days all I can say is "leave it be!" This is great work!

Oooh, how cute!!! he looks terribly deprived of attention. poor guy was probabl;y suffering a lot. LOL. dogs are great. the only thing that jumped out at me is maybe darkening shadowa where his hind leg rests agains his side; i guess it'd be called the stifle (or maybe not-could just be that on horses.... ). other than that, it looks great!! it's sooo cute! great work!
P.S CONGRATS on your new grand-nephew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, you guys! I will work on some more shading on him. I don't think I can brighten the highlights but I think I'm going to try and do the darkening. But I like it and am chicken that I'll ruin it! So easy does it....
Thanks for your suggestions. I really do appreciate it. You know what it's like with family/friends, they all just tell you how good it is and don't ever help you with improvements. I am really trying to grow.

This is great! I really like the textures of the couch and the dogs face.

Thanks so much. I have to say, I was worried about it working since he is looking off the page I was worried the composition was not correct, but I just LIKED it, you know? I think it worked because he's not looking AT anything.

Poor old guy! You did such a great rendering of the expression! The only tiny thing I can see, which may be because of the scan, is that his head looks like it's not making any dent at all in the couch cushion, so IMHO, I think he doesn't look "quite" as pitiful as he would otherwise. Great job! I just want to give him a big hug!

Thanks, Suzy. I did fix that in the final. I am sure it was the flash washed it out and I didn't see it. Still insecure about not following my reference....although I'm getting better. I think.

Oh that poor wee pitiful pup!! What a great job you did of capturing the essence of what he was feeling and conveying it to the rest of us!! I think this is wonderful, especially him looking away and showing how neglected he is. Poor thing!!
Very good work!
