Re: Lighthouse - my first painting

That bird must be something to behold in person. It is beautiful.

You are getting lots of good feedback on your painting.

Re: Lighthouse - my first painting

Many thanks for all of the positive feedback and compliments. It is all very encouraging. I owe it, mostly, to turning on the TV during a few lunch breaks a few weeks ago, and watched Scheewee, Dewberry and Ross do what they do and I wondered if I could do that. I was fascinated by it all. So, the adventure begins. I'm excited. I'm off in the A.M. on a 2100 mile drive back to Calif (home). I came here (to S Texas)to work on an old 1919 house and am going home with the enthusiasm of learning how to paint, which I never had any idea that I'd ever decide to put a paint brush to a canvass. I'll be on the road for 5 days, with a stop here and there. I'll leave my gallons of Glidden and drywall canvasses here in Texas and buy some proper supplies when I get back home. Signing off for a while. Best regards to all. Dennis G

I know what you mean about the great works other people post, but I don't think you have anything to worry about. Like you, I watched Susan Scheewee and Bob Ross then tried it. My view is that art is a personal journey, but I will say that you're ahead of me already, so keep it up! :-)

Re: Lighthouse - my first painting

That metal bird is something !! I loved it. The pose is so balanced !!

I also love the painting, you also tried an ocean scene for a first try. I'm planning to attempt one in the near future.

I was studying on the subject and I did find some resources you might enjoy:

This is a video by Darrel Crow, that man is amazing and he explains it in great detail. This is one video of 19 available, I liked this one best but I recommend you see all of them. I learned a lot from them. My favorite was this one:

Also for the island dirt look and the trees, you should check out Bob Ross for some ideas. Here is a link:

Your colors are amazing! I would love to have the painting in my room...
And the bird on my rooftop. Metalworking has always astounded me. I will get into it eventually!

Re: Lighthouse - my first painting

Thanks for the nice reviews, Ugh. I'm thinking that it just might have been beginners luck with that painting. There is so much to learn. I feel like I'm doing kindergarden work when compared to all of the fantastic paintings posted on WC. Best regards, DG

Yes there is so much to learn about painting and it may be beginners luck but tou never know until you try again, So there are better artists on the boards but I have to say there are a ton of terrible artists too, way worse than what you posted. Keep at it. I think you will surprise yourself.

Re: Lighthouse - my first painting

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Lady Carol. I ordered my first real artist's supplies online, today (canvas, brushes, palette knives), and am ready to give it my best shot. We shall see. Thanks, again. Dennis G

Re: Lighthouse - my first painting

Your first post is wonderful, I hope you continue with paints and canvas or board, it's obvious by your metal work you have a good sense of style and graceful lines. I love the bird. Being a crafts person, you have a lot of artistic talent and it certainly shows in your metal work and soon in acrylics as well. Look forward to more of your work.
