Clematis - WIP
This is 25.5 X 28.5 inches on Stonehenge paper with Faber Castell Polychromos pencils. I am quite enjoying this one so far. Colours used in the petals are mauve, manganese violet, purple violet, violet, middle purple pink, and light ultramarine.

Thanks smudged.
Where in NSW are you from? I grew up in Sydney, then I left for other parts of the world.

Re: Clematis - WIP
I live approx an hour and a half drive south of sydney, and have lived here most my life. I went to Tasmania for a little while (just a few months) when my parents decided to move there, but I decided to move back here, for love (which really worked out great). So you got to travel other parts of the world, where have you been? and which was your favourite?

Re: Clematis - WIP
smudged, I have been all over. Hubby and I met on the south coast of NSW in a little town called Bendalong just south of Jervis Bay and it was his job that took us OS. We were in the UK for 4 years with work, and traveled Europe whenever we could get the chance and then ended up on the northeast coast of the US near all those metropolitan cities. We have been here for 18 years. I don't like it here all that much, but it is good for my occupation (scientist) so we stay. It is too much of a rat race in around NY, Philly, Washington. The weather is crap in winter. I like the snow but I hate the cold haha, a bit of a conundrum that one. Australia is the best for family and friends but Europe made me have an appreciation for history.
We went to Tassie one trip home, we try to go somewhere that we have not been before in Oz between visiting the rels. Like you, nice to visit but I would not want to live there. I am glad that you found true love when you moved back.
Katherine: thanks
Marion: thanks too
Janeway: are you related to "the "Janeway"? Thank you for commenting.

Re: Clematis - WIP
Carol - Sounds like you have seen many places, must be a wonderful experience to get to see so many countries, to learn how others live. What sort of scientist are you? Sounds very smart . I'm a house wife for now, as our three boy's are young (we have an 8 year old, 7 year old and a 3 year old). Before hubby and I had children I worked in animal care (in a boarding facility) looking after dogs and cats, I worked my way up to management looking after as many as 200 dogs and 60 cats in boarding at one time as well as many others that the boss owned (clearly with other staff). I do miss being with the animals and look forward to getting back into it.
I recently found Clematis (as I'm not familiar with a lot of flowers) in the ref Library here and think they are beautiful, I considered having a go at one (instead of the purple tulip), but trying to achieve the centre was a little worrying.
I only just realized the size of this piece, it is quite big. Do you usually work this big? What mediums do you like to work in? only colored pencils or is there others? real looking forward to see this one when it's finished.
I think I better stop chatting (give your eye's a rest and let someone else a turn ), as hubby say's once I start I don't seem to stop.

Re: Clematis - WIP
Carol, nice choice of flowers. I have many pics of both white and purple clematis that grow on our deck in abundance. You have inspired me to try painting one or two. I look forward to watching you complete this work.
My wife and I used to own a sailboat that we kept south of Vancouver, BC. Beautiful country in the summer and fall. Loved motoring on the water up there, especially going up Jervis Inlet to Princess Louisa Inlet, one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Re: Clematis - WIP
Smudged - drawing has always been my first love in art but for a while there I got side tracked in acrylics. There I "learned" to see colour and mix it so when I went back to drawing, coloured pencils made sense. I am better with pencils than I am with a brush, so largely I have abandoned anything that is not a pencil. I also work in graphite. These days now, I do work fairly large. I like that it takes a bit of time to do this, maybe 4-5 weekends will see this done if my motivation keeps at the level that it is at. I did start small when I was learning to paint and then worked larger and larger.....
It sounds as though you have a full life with 3 boys, just as challenging to raise, as looking after 200+ animals in your former life. The barn where my horse lives now does dog rescue on the side. It has been fun watching the parade of mostly adolescent dogs come through and then knowing that they have been adopted out.
Clematis are pretty. I never saw them in Oz and met my first one in the UK. We now have two in the back yard that are currently in full growth after being dormant over the winter. They are about to bud and will bloom in a month or so.

Re: Clematis - WIP
Carol, I had to laugh when you said NY weather is "crap" in the winter. Yes, it is normally, this year was not so bad at all, very mild. Anyway, getting back to your clematis, I think it's great so far and am looking forward to seeing more.

Re: Clematis - WIP
Just have a few questions for you about your pencils. Have you ever used prismas? I really like my prismas and am getting very frustrated with the continually low quality and considering another brand. How do the faber castells feel to work with? Do you find faber castell to have a good color range or are you having to buy other brands to get a better color range? I know there is info on this sort of stuff in cp forum, I was just curious what your opinion was working with this brand.
Have you had any time to work on this any further by any chance? I think these are going to turn out great.

Re: Clematis - WIP
Thank you Miss Elaine
mcassatt - you are right that the waether in the NE has been better this winter. Spring started with a warm bang but not it has cooled off to what it is normally like.
Smudged- I really like FC pencils. I did try Prismas but sold them as I did not like the way they blended or how they felt when dragged across the paper. Fabers are oil based not waxy like Prismas and with Stonehenge paper, in my hands they play well together. I only have Faber's. Actually that is not true, I have Derwents and another brand that I am blanking on right now, but never use them in my drawings. I just like Fabers a lot.
I have not had a great deal of time to work on this, unfortunately but here is where it is at. additional colours are hookers green, earth green yellowish, apple green, cadmium yellow lemon, , permanent green olive.
