Re: What went wrong

Not sure there is something "wrong" and my expertise is limited on the technical side of photgraphy.

I actually rather like this crop and the details are esp nice from a step back.

no guess from me, just a kudo

life is good

Re: What went wrong

I know many people with blotchy skin so I guess I didn't notice that.

Re: What went wrong

I made that mistake while vacationing in Florida. All 800 pictures cannot be blown up any bigger than 3X5. I was so sick about it.

Dudley, I hope you can figure it out and I hope CC is correct because it is an easy fix.

Re: What went wrong

Did you use a tripod? Because on my monitor it looks more fuzzy than just blotchy, and using a tripod would help make it tack sharp.

Re: What went wrong

Not all of them did this. Some, with better light from a window look fine and then some with better light look low res as well. But the setting for image size were hi res.

Re: What went wrong

Two guesses, you state two different light sources - that alone could have tricked things up if they are far enough apart in coolness/warmness. And at only four feet away with a flash could have been fooling the registers as to how much light to process. Plus, at ISO 800 there will tend to been a little noise anyway so could have just greatly increased this in selected areas.

Just my guesses. But my money would be on the mixed lighting.

I agree, I do think that's likely the culprit.
That being said, I actually like the photo like this.

Re: What went wrong

My suggestion would be to lower the ASA, use a tri pod and use natural light. While I am NOT a fan of photo shop, some would suggest it or Iphoto to smooth out the skin. I happen to love "natural" people with real features.

Re: What went wrong

You understand, of course, that for you it may be a mistake; for someone else it may be on purpose art.

I actually like this photo. Do it again!

Re: What went wrong

What camera are you using? It looks like a tight crop on 5 or 6 megapixel image from a camera with a slow sensor. 800 may be too high for your camera.

Re: What went wrong

ISO 800 is a little high and is probably is the main problem. Also if you take a photo a little on the dark side then lighten it later on the computer it will have more grain. The more light you have the better the image will look. That's a pretty slow shutter speed for taking photos of people because people move especially kids... I never shoot below 1/160 on people if I can help it. Tripods help with landscapes and things that don't move.
