A New Tool: Tattoo Needle

I have been discovering the joy of working with a Tattoo Needle. There is such a variety of needles. I went to a Tattoo Parlor and asked if I could buy a couple to try it out and the man there gave me a few.

I tried taping one to a pencil, but it didn't work. I ended up having my husband cut the head off and with the heads that had a smaller rod I put them in a mechanical pencil (where the lead goes) the ones that were to big to fit in the mechanical pencil I put tape around them so they fit into a different holder (I forget what they are called, but they open like the giant worms in "Dune" open their mouths.) So anyone who knows what the tool is called please speak up.

I really like these. I ended up going on Amazon and buying 50 in different sizes.
I am including some images. I took the end off the Mechanical Pencil to make the needle fit better.

There are also samples of the texture they make on the board.

I still like the scalpel better, but these work great for a final smoothing.

Diana

This needle is about 6 inches long.

Actually Diana, Rod gave me a couple of these when I went to Indy and I never got around to experimenting with them. I just had a go and they are really fine and do a nice soft job of cross-hatching. Thanks for reminding me about them I'll have to get a cheap mech pencil now.

Looks like you can cover a large area with the wide ones. Very nice and thanks for the info always looking for new tools.

That looks pretty slick, Diana! Thanks for the info. Seems to work like the Ampersand multi-point tool, but better.

I wonder too how long they stay sharp?

BTW, I think the "Dune worm" type of thing is called a "clutch pencil". Although I like Diana's description much better!!

I knew exactly the type of tool you were talking about from you description, but didn't know the name...I think Ann is right on that.

Sure wish I had one of those wide ones right now! You could cover a lot of area in a big hurry with that one.

Re: A New Tool: Tattoo Needle

Thanks for letting me know what they are called Ann.
The needles take a bit more pressure than our usual tools and they leave a texture on the board. I have noticed a small amount of chipping with severe cross hatching.
They seem to stay sharp for quite a while, though I haven't used them for very long so I don't have much data on this. They certainly last longer than a scalpel blade.
Lorna, I bought a bunch so I could share in July.
Jenny, I will be interested in seeing what you do with them.

What a great discovery, Diana... thanks for sharing. The Ampersand line tool is my favorite but it doesn't hold up well (it either falls out of the holder or I drop it and the tines get wonky). This looks like the solution for me! Thanks bunches ... and I can't wait until July. I'm off to order some.

Re: A New Tool: Tattoo Needle

I think the holder you are describing is called a "lead holder", most commonly they hold a 2mm drawing lead, although you can find them in 3mm.

I went to Amazon and looked, and couldn't find the multi needles, what do they call them?
