Re: What's on Your Easel: April 2012

Barbara, Nice portrait, His eyes bother me some yet.. too blank, need some life.. maybe a spot of bright reflection to show life. Nice soft colors!
Steve, THANKS I really appreciate it!!
Jon, Look forward to seeing your artwork!!
Gail, THANKS so much, I 'm loveing the changes in your flowers/background, the darker darks are giving it a much more needed depth, definitely making them pop off the canvas. I really like where this one is going!!
Howard, Love both of your pieces!!
Not much more done on the Horn, Going away tomorrow am till late Monday so been packing!
Later all, Have fun and HAPPY PAINTING and HAPPY EASTER!!!

This is a painting I'm doing for an upcoming show at our local museum. It has been going now for several years and started out as a place for local artists to display anything related to fishing because it is at the peak tourist season when there is a local fishing derby. It has now changed to include any local activities to give the artists a wider range of options for displaying their particular interests but still runs through the fishing derby dates. My particular interests fit nicely into the fishing catagory and I'm still following the original theme. This painting is an example.
It is based on several photos that I took a couple of years ago when a family of tourists hit the jackpot with a large salmon and the whole family was invlolved in the fun! I'm sending the pictures in as the work progresses starting with the sketch and the first bit of colour in the river and shoreline.
Trying again to add pictures.

Re: What's on Your Easel: April 2012

Gail - I like your flowers!
Kathie - Love your musical instruments series. Always neat stuff.
Howard - Both pieces are very intriguing. Looking forward to seeing it all finished.

Here's what I'm working on:

We went to Pennsylvania's farm country recently. I actually started this one in plein air and now I'm finishing it in the studio. 11" x 14" Acrylic on Canvas covered board. Still working on the barns, but I'm fairly happy with the field and tractor. Colors aren't quite the same in this pic as real life. I'll try to get a better photo later in the process.

'surroundedbypaint' I love your style. I grew up rural, so I'm very drawn to this type of scenery. Love the tractor.

This is my first application of colour to the gessoed board after sketching the main characters. It looks like this will finally work. Thanks for the help from Charlies Mom!

Re: What's on Your Easel: April 2012

So glad it's all working now Jon -

This is looking good! Love those foreground pebbles - they're working really well - so's the sea.

Is this on canvas? How big is it?

I have looked at all the others too everyone!
We have a good variation in styles here - nice to see.

Calin4.... - also checked your website - think I can see how this might develop

Howard - really like how the painting turned out - but your masks scare me!

Happy Easter weekend to you all - painting might take a back seat perhaps?

Re: What's on Your Easel: April 2012

This is the latest bit of work. The size is 32" x 46" on gessoed masonite and the storyline is several posts back which gives the background of the painting. I'll paste it in with this post.

Re: What's on Your Easel: April 2012

Jon that foreground is wonderful with all those rocks and pebbles. This is looking really good!

Spenser, I like what you have so far. The texture on the grass is really nice.

Howard, I really like your abstracts, but I'm with Maureen on your masks. They're scary, but that's probably what you want. Those stitches across the mouth make me squirm. How do you get those fine lines for your circles? Do you use a bottle with a fine opening or something else? I especially like the colors and composition in post #20!

GR, your tulips with the dark background really is eye catching! I like it!

Barbara, your portrait has so much character and the expression makes me want to know what he's thinking. Well done! Do you plan to do more or stop here?

Kathie the French Horn is spectacular. I look forward to seeing where you take it now.

Steve, your portrait has such a sense of serenity. Beautiful!

Kathrin, your stallion is looking good. He has a regal quality in his stance.

Calin, your Mack truck looks great coming out of the tunnel. I can almost hear the horn honking.

I have a couple projects I'm working on, one is the somewhat unrealistic cliff scene from last month and the other is an abstract. I hope to post updates either later today or tomorrow.

I hope I didn't miss anyone.
Happy painting!
