When mixing colours, always start with the lightest and add the darker gradually - you'll soon learn about quantities - acrylics (the way you're using them) go a long way
Try working on paper, bigger size, and just play with paint and colour - see what the paint will do and how colours interact. Just enjoy the physical act of using paint - thick, thin, running
I suggest paper - or card even - anything for acrylics! - textured hardboard/plywood can quickly wear the brushes out
The most important advice any of us can give you at the onset is to ENJOY all the experimenting by PLAYING with the materials

Thank you! Reading your post gave me an idea. Probably something everyone else is already doing, but new for me - I could put out the two colors, a bit far from each other on the palette and then use my knife to transfer tiny bits, like a micro-tipful at a time, of the dark to the light and repeat as needed, adding some medium if I'm taking too long sneaking up on the color.
Kind of like a titration. Why didn't I think of this earlier, I'm a chemist!

Re: April Landscape Challenge 2012
Raster this is brilliant... I am in awe
Mek listen to Mum... she has guided me and helped me so many times. My progress as a painter in many ways is due to her kindness and talent.
Hope to catch up on all the forum and start on the gallery over the weekend... You all still have time to swish those brushes...
Sunface, Looking forward to your hosting, cant wait to see what you have in store for us. I get time to participate in the coming month.
Cheers everyone, freezing cold here and raining tonight..... Autumn finally decided to show its head "Downunder"

Meggs- Very good rendition of the spray/mist of the torrent,IMHO.
Rob- Terrific painting, to me. Came out as good as it looked it might at the first.
I am still playing down by the creek, 24x18 acrylic/gessoed kraft paper

Re: April Landscape Challenge 2012
You all made wonderful paintings. It was so much fun to watch them all
Here is my my version of the beach scene. It is pastels on paper. I am not very happy with it, but it was the first time after three years that i put the pastels out.

Re: April Landscape Challenge 2012
Meryl, that's quite a powerful painting of the Falls - they do look thunderous!
Raster - a superb painting IMHO - I honestly do like your interpretation of rocks and water
Trier - another very exciting painting - I'd love to see you do this work on a big canvas without losing the freshness you show here.
Laura - I like that sky! Nice quick pastel
I'm glad I joined this month - got to know some new (to me) members so I hope to find time again next month.

Can't get to where I want on this creek, yet. Sunny day interpretation.
18x24 acrylic/dark gessoed kraft paper

trifle blurry, camera shake
Maureen- I have a 28x32 frame that I have been wanting to fill. maybe very soon, now that you gave me a little push.
Regards,
Trier

Re: April Landscape Challenge 2012
Meggs, I couldn't let the month go by without trying one of your terrific references. Here's Cook Island from Fingal Head: first is the crop I did from your photo, then the work. Oil on canvas panel, 5x7 in, palette knife. Thanks again for hosting, and thanks to all who contributed such wonderful work!

Re: April Landscape Challenge 2012
Bill, this is terrific, so glad you were able to join in. After seeing Vlad and then your knife work, Im thinking what I have seen before was very poor quality. This is extremely effective.
Wet Bob, for a 1st time round, Id say this qualifies as damnnnnn good.
