Re: Sargent: Portrait Challenge for April & May
Thank you very much Alexandra...I'll stop lurking but to draw non stop would be a pleasure..but would need a break or two !!!!
It will be very hard to meet the standards set already by the artists on here..but I'll see what I can do....

Re: Sargent: Portrait Challenge for April & May
This is Mrs. William Shakespeare. Sargeant painted her and I changed her dress color. Done several months ago for the Masters project exchange. this was painted rather small. Can't remember if it was 2.50 X 3.50 inches or larger.

Sandra, this is great handling of charcoals! She has a sense of mystery about her that you've added from your own special heart!
And thank you so much for all the encouragement you've been giving everyone here while my connection was down - you are such an angel!
It was a treat to get online again and see everyone getting excited about the Sargent Challenge! Please try a lot more than one, since this challenge will be up thru May! My camera is still on the fritz or I would show you my start on the nude Egyptian girl. I was going to make it a WIP, but now I think I'll just finish it before I post, or if I can't get satisfied with my effort, start a WIP in the middle.
All of your work is so nicely done, folks, and I hope I can measure up...if I can't, I'll continue to lurk...

Re: Sargent: Portrait Challenge for April & May
Here's my WIP, the third draft. This is "Young Girl wearing a White Muslin"
It's about 6x6", graphite and charcoal on bond paper. I learned several things with the second version. One biggie was that I make everything larger that life, a second was a breakthrough in how to look, how to see better. Now I can transfer those understandings to my work. Finally, I feel like I'm making progress, it no longer feels like a complete exercise in futility! Thanks for looking.
C&C welcome.

Lots of beautiful work here. I haven't been in the portrait challenge thread for ages. Every single one I love, I don't know where to start-guess I'll have to do all of them....lol

Re: Sargent: Portrait Challenge for April & May
Wow, lets of great posts here. Please keep posting and I hope I can joint you all next month.
Ken: The pastel is juicy and the strokes are Sargentm like. Of course, your works are always good. I am that I am alergic to pastel dust. But I still learn a lots from how you apply your pastel.
Sandra: The way you apply your charcoal shown that you have been study Sargent for a while. Because I was in the Boston Museum of Fine Art for two days. There is a whole section dedicated to Sargent's works and I saw lots of his charcoal works, they are simple lines and yet very effective. I am bowing to this master. I am also bowing to William Paxton's oil. BMFA owns 19 of his paintings and I only got to see 3. I hope to see more of your drawings.

Re: Sargent: Portrait Challenge for April & May
José, what a lot of work you've done already, and it all looks super! Great accuracy, and you've made it look easy, which, in my book, is a Sargent skill!
wjrmonkey, what a beautiful start you have on the Italian woman - she looks lovely! This is one that's on my list to do, too!
