I have a question about a story I wrote...

Recently, I wrote a humorous but true story about something that happened to me when I first became an artist. It was about an unusual art job that I did. It was recently published by Renderosity Magazine in their bonus cd, but I did not receive pay for it. Can I use that story in other places now, since it is mine, or can anyone else publish it since it was published in Renderosity Artist Magazine? Thanks. Lorraine Foster

Bit rusty on this but some years ago I worked as a freelance journalist to pay my student fees.

There are different types of copyright in journalism and depending which one was stippulated when you submitted your piece then it's hard to say.

I've forgot the legal names for them but basically one allows the magazine to print it once only, another offers world rights etc etc.

You need to find out which copyright they worked to in this instance to answer whether you can sell it again for publication.
In my work I use to write three articles on the same story but each from a different angle so each was different and I didn't have to worry about such things but if you want to submit the piece to another journal I would definately get in touch with them first.

Hi Lorraine,
First let me say that your story was wonderful - very creative and well written.

If an article [story/ tutorial/ interview] is featured "within the pages of the Renderosity Magazine" - the Magazine's Publishing Agreement states: The Contributor agrees not to submit an article, in original, excerpted, or other revised form, to any other book or magazine publisher, web site, or digital media publisher unless and until 90 days have passed following the date of the article's publication in Renderosity Magazine.

However, articles featured within the CD - have no re-submission restrictions.

In short - you are free to re-submit your story to another publication.

Thank you so much for your contribution and we hope you will submit another story to us in the near future.

Dee-Marie
