I dont think there is an easier way, but I'll add to Red Dot's method - the ink will dry really slow on the metal so if you, like me, cant wait, just dip the plate with wet ink and all (oil based ink) into your etching medium (acid, ferric, etc) for 2 or 3 seconds. This will fix the image as a dull negative, which still prints white as the metal is not etched just stained. Your positive image of plate 1 will be shiny and clearly visible. You may want to test this on a scrap piece first but I've had no problems with this method. I haven't tried it with a water based/soluble ink yet but as the etchant dip is so quick it may work too.
