Curious: Are you an Art Collector?
Do you have another artist's picture hanging in your home? I am not talking of the $19.99 one from WalMart.

Re: Curious: Are you an Art Collector?
Good question. I'm not a collector, and don't know that I'm aiming to be one, per se, but I would like to decorate my home in beautiful originals some day. Until recently it hasn't even been on the radar financially, but we are progressing through Dave Ramsey's financial plan and are now debt-free except for our house. Hopefully that means I can budget to acquire some original work one of these days!

I usually pick up something at local art walks. My favorite place to purchase original art is at the local art college's senior show. Not only do you help the students financially, it's a great boost to their confidence.

Re: Curious: Are you an Art Collector?
I've participated in several WetCanvas Christmas card exchanges over in the Pen & Ink forum as well as several original Christmas cards in both charcoal and colored pencil. Also took part in a Portrait Exchange a few years back, have a beautifully rendered pastel portrait from an artist whos talent I can't even come near to. Any original art I collect from artists here I hold dear.
For inspirational purposes I have a Claude Theberge print on the wall by my easel. To date I have not hung any of my own work.

Re: Curious: Are you an Art Collector?
My husband and I are both artists. However, both of us hold down other full time jobs. Since we have had little time for our own work, we have collected others original art over the years, often from outdoor art shows, some from friends, and we have recently added two large pieces of our daughter's, a painting and a charcoal drawing, that she did while in art school. Nothing expensive. That was never in the budget. We have a small house, so it feels kind of like living in a gallery sometimes. I do have a stairway hall with lots of wall space left, though!

Re: Curious: Are you an Art Collector?
This would be a good time to start thinking of a CP swap to start our collections of our artists here at WC...not sure how it would work or parameters or even if anyone would be interested.

Re: Curious: Are you an Art Collector?
yes i have art in my home. but i like to hang pieces from people i know or have some kind of personal connection. currently i have some of my dad's water colors and wood carvings, my sister's photography and stained glass, some beautiful black and red tlinget art from alaska (my sister lives up there), stained glass from another friend, pottery from another, my grandma's quilts.... and a couple prints of water colors down by and indian artist- i love her work, they belonged to my mother and i'm about a quarter cherokee.
so there you go. none of my own yet- but i'm in the process of framing them so soon my work will join the others.

Re: Curious: Are you an Art Collector?
I also have paintings from other artists in my home. My husband has bought some, and one especially as a gift for me...it was an oil painting I saw in a gallery, that I absolutely loved....of a scene that we all love! so I got it for Christmas a few years back. Maybe the painter is famous, maybe not. I still love the painting.
Of course some of my art is also displayed!!!!

Interesting...perhaps people could be paired up by drawing names, and then exchange reference photos that they would like the other person to draw for them. It would be an interesting way to collect cp art, and also a challenge to depict whatever subject matter is presented. (Perhaps we could pick a theme for the swap, such as landscapes, wildlife, plant life, still life, or portraits). Or it could be a free-for-all regarding the subject matter, depending on how brave people are. Then the finished works would need to be completed by a certain date and could be exchanged by mail.
I would be game for something like this, and even willing to coordinate it if there were enough interest, and if it were ok with our friendly forum moderators.
