Internet videos as a marketing tool?

Has anyone of you used videos for marketing your work and skils?

I like to watch timelapse or other videos where artists are creating something unique and it seems that other people like them too. So I have been thinking making one or couple of this kind of videos. Would it be worth it?

If I could make a video of creating something very special there might be a change that wievers would do adverticing and spredding this video for me.

Re: Internet videos as a marketing tool?

I think videos are an awesome way to market artwork!

I don't do 'creation' videos, but do enjoy showing off my completed works (and links) this way. I've had some success through YouTube, and have learned a lot about making a decent vid as I've gone along. Videos are a great, affordable way to expand your web presence and keep viewers excited to see 'what comes next'.

and, some WetCanvas YouTube threads that might be helpful -

Best of luck!

My digital camera will take video of a quality suitable for Youtube, I'm sure most cameras do these days. (In fact my phone has this facility too, up to the 2 gigabytes that my memory card will take.)

The video software I use, Proshow Producer, will even allow me to combine stills (.jpg, .tiff, etc.) and video clips into a new show.

This is all so much easier than even a few years ago. Gotta love technology!

Re: Internet videos as a marketing tool?

I think you need to be asking this question of artists that actually do demos online.

Personally , I don't think it is a good use of an artist's time if she/he is trying to sell art. I think these videos are more suited to an artist trying to sell teaching art.

Re: Internet videos as a marketing tool?

Many businesses are using Youtube videos as adverts for thier wares, anything from holidays, angling guides, electrical appliances, games, furniture... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6xr4...2&feature=plcp I see no reason they won't sell paintings too.

The majority are selling easy to produce products. They don't have to produce each individual different item and then do all the marketing as well. The time and effort going into making and promoting these videos cuts into time creating the art. You would be far better off contracting that out to someone else. That of course means you have to have enough of a profit margin to support this. It is all return on investment. It is just like advertising in art magazines. More often than not you are not reaching your target market in a way that pays off in the long run.

It takes very little time to either have a video camera running while you work, or to create a slideshow of images of the finished works. Promoting them only requires the correct search indexes and keywords attatched when uploading to the youtube server since most are searching the Youtube database while on the site. Adding links from Facebook and a blog will also help. I'd say 15 or 20 minutes worth of work, about the same time as the average helpline or customer service queue waiting time... It is another way of finding clients using a different search method, in addition to a website or page on a larger site.
This is a relatively short investment of time, it may not sell work but there is nothing that can guarantee sales. Part of working as an artist is spending time on promotion and paperwork. It is another step in finding buyers or business partners and probably just as viable as any other online presence.
As for advertising in art magazines, this has an inbuilt cost to the artist, youtube is free. Chalk and cheese.
