Re: Dreamcatcher
These are skilfully done! Perhaps you want to give us more information, like what size they are, what medium you used, what kind of working methods you follow, e.g., do you use reference photographs or live models or just your imagination, etc? Perhaps show us some works in progress?
The classical art section tends to be rather quiet, so we can do with more posts. ;-)

Re: Dreamcatcher
Dreamcatcher is 24x30 in. oil on canvas.
I used a photo reference for the flowers, and the rest is imagination.
I didn't have a preliminary drawing.
I just started on the left with the flowers, and moved across the canvas.
Beata is partly from a photo of a model.
The "garment" is imaginary, integrating into the torn, leathery background .
The crochet motifs have a relief effect.
You can't tell from the photo, but the contrast between the white "paper" , and other textures is quite pronounced.
I started with the surrounding area, and integrated the figure into it.
I didn't have a preliminary drawing.
It measures 20x24" , oil on canvas.

Re: Dreamcatcher
These are quite remarkable. What are your influences? They have almost a fantacy quality to them.

Re: Dreamcatcher
All your work is quite lovely, sensual and lyrical...
Dream-catcher caught me unawares; as you have gone beyond the usual Native American inspired connection with it...her side view/somewhat formal pose with floral stalk -symbolic?- is quite thought provoking !
Creative and unique and quite modern, personal combination of period styles and references in all!
Your last WIP is reminiscent of Roman-or Roman-inspired fresco or funerary portraits...very serene and clear-eyed, lovely visage...
I confess it is your Beata that particularly speaks to me...she is such an integral part of her surroundings; your touch of open crochet work on her shoulder is a perfect foil to the worn and weathered effect of the back-ground support...the directional flow of her simple hair ornamentation matches beautifully the continuity of flow of the threading on her clothing.....
...and the fact the colour scheme is a Fall one only adds to it's appeal to me!
Regards,
Chris/WildGoose

Re: Dreamcatcher
Beautiful work. Dreamcatcher is so interesting in the combination of cultures. I like the second one because of the way the woman is integrated with her surroundings. The third one is very romantic. I hope you will post more of your work.

Re: Dreamcatcher
Many thanks for your insightful comments.
There are many influences, and I work from observation and imagination at the same time.
Sometimes I start out painting from observation, and then my imagination takes over.
In Dreamcatcher, the hair is both somewhat Roman and Victorian, and sci-fi/fantasy.
The dreamcatcher itself is more realistically painted than the rest of the painting, which is actually more dreamy [!]
In fact , the woman is the real dreamcatcher, because she is lost in a daydream, and the dreamcatcher hanging from her [imaginary?] hairstyle can be seen as a whimsical symbol of her dreamy ways.
Beata does start as a solid person, but her garment dissolves into the worn surrounding [old leather?]
I like to suggest things, but not always define them completely, it leaves things open for interpretation.
The last image was influenced a bit by Bouguereau.
Again there is a torn paper or tissue background, this time tinged with lilac, [I love quinacridone pigment].
I've included another image which has a dreamcatcher in it.
I can't think of a title. Any suggestions?
