Wow, if I had looked at the other uploads I would never have sent mine. They are great. I didn't try to do the fabric, but now wish I had. You guys are GOOD. MaryPat

Wow! Well done everyone!
Here is my attempt: 8" x 10" on 140 lb water color paper. As you can see, I need way more practice.

Thanks again Dewi for hosting this challenge. I really enjoyed it.

Allison

Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

How did you guys get your fabric to look like fabric with folds? That's what I was attempting and even though I have light, medium & dark areas, it doesn't look like folded fabric. It just looks like blue swirls.
Where did I go wrong and how did you do it? Did you lay down a medium value & then add the lights and darks? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Once again, great job everyone.

Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

Good question, Allison. I did two attempts and the background looks very poor and flat I'll post it later, need to make photos first.

Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

Hi Dan I ve never tried knife painting you ve got sme nice texture with it

Mary glad you sent it do not be too hard with yourself your oranges are very nice indeed just play with the bg if you like but a coped will make a nice painting the way it is

Hi Allison and Dominika I m no expert in folds as i usually do animals lol but you should look at them and then paint what you re seeing it is the light against the dark that makes it sometimes it has to be soft for large folds or hard for sharp folds
I took libety to play with Allison 's just to show you that you re on the right road hope you do not mind

Ttop left is your pict then right I pushed the darks then bottom left i pecised the highlihts then bottom roght I put some line to follow the folds they help a lot

hope it answer you question and help you others people are more specialists than me

Robert

Wow what fantastic work here already, love them all. Mine is one of the first 3 images, couldn't find the others. It's done on a 9 x 12 gessoed board. Lil

Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

Oh Robert, thank you very much for taking the time to show me the way! That really helps a lot! I kept getting all discombobulated in the folds...light?dark? folding out? folding in? direction! LOL I can now see how having lines to follow really helps. In your example, I see that if the guideline curves up, the fold is curving out and if the guideline curves down, the fold curves in.

Thank you soooo much. Now I want to get more practice doing folds.

dominika, hope you can post your picture soon. See Roberts reply too. It's really helpful.

Hi ArtsyMom, we must have been posting at the same time. The folds on the white parts are great!

Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

Here's my entry, done on 9 x 12 cradled artist panel.

This was such a wonderful reference to paint. I really enjoyed it and found it quite challenging! The color contrasts are what drew me to the reference and helped make it so much fun! Thanks Dewi!!!

I'll be back later to comment.
