A Tree

Hi guys,

Did this as a warm-up ... haven't painted a tree for quite a while... 2 hours ... no pencil sketching... 20" x 14" on Saunders. Hope to do a proper landscape with better planning soon...

I cheated a bit... hightlights of leaves painted using goauche instead...

Warm up, you say? This is lovely! I like the simplicity of the composition very much and the tree is very well done. It has a spring feel to it.

I might be wrong...but I think that shadow could be made a tad more interesting--a bit darker and some color variation. Not really necessary, though...just a suggestion...since the light on the tree seems quite strong.

Olga

WONDERFUL tree! I am finding out how difficult they are to paint. Well, many things are difficult but you do such a beautiful job of your trees. I also enjoyed your article re the painting of trees. Thank you for sharing.

Lovely Marvin. You are trees expert. I love the shadow under the tree.

Painting trees and branches in one stroke are still a big problem to me, I could not yet make them look realistic.

Marvin, you are the foliage guru!!! I like the composition. What do you consider to be a 'proper' landscape? I'm impressed that you did this without pencilling...

Hello Marvin,

Bet it felt good to paint a tree again after all your animals.

This is a lovely study and the foliage looks light and airy as it usually is in the early spring.

Agree with Olga that your shadow could be a little darker and more interesting. Obviously it is high noon or thereabouts with the shadow directly beneath the tree, so the sun would be bright and high in the sky.

Look forward to your "more finished" landscape.

Marvin--you are the Tree Master! Lovely, spring scene

BTW, my little granddaughter (6) really loved your Zodiak paintings--you already know I do!
