Re: Ros's learning watercolour journal

This is my attempt at another WTPLTA "want to paint like this artist" . John Yardley this time - BUT sorry Mr Yardley, it's nothing like your work. He always manages to paint with such decisive strokes, edits out the unimportant stuff and gets the values right first time. I wish I had the confidence to paint like that - and I must learn how to paint trees
This painting was another from WDE. I see now I should have had more than 2 sheep, but maybe because they are together it reads as one. Ref photo by oldrockchick - 26 x 17 cm

What an inspiring post! I love that your sketches are all pulled together and look cohesive. I will be watching this post to see how they develop and what inspires you next. I would love to see how your little sketches inspire you to do bigger paintings!

Re: Ros's learning watercolour journal

Ros, I think this looks quite good! The colors and composition are great, the animals are well done, and I like the trees (which to me are very hard to do)!

Re: Ros's learning watercolour journal

I haven't looked at any of John Yardley's work recently but I remember him using very strong darks in his composition. You don't seem to have used those in your painting but I think you have a soft edged very beautifully blended landscape. I like the sheep in particular. And the trees look fine to me too

Re: Ros's learning watercolour journal

Monkeyqueen thanks for your comments.
Thanks Doug - Kat? you mean Skatty?
Debra - thanks also for your continuing encouragement. It is great to have a cheer squad to push you along
Irena - thanks for looking in and your nice comments. Yes JY does have lots of darks in his work but he gets the values right from the first stroke - I really admire his paintings.

Here is last nights effort - another from WDE. The photo tempted me because of the lights and darks in it. Not a patch on Mr Yardley but I am still learning. I'll be on to another style next in an effort to find my own way.

Re: Ros's learning watercolour journal

Wow, Ros you are doing so well. I really like this sketch too! The people and birds are very well done.

It is fascinating to see all of the different styles you are trying out. It is just totally fun to see people growing and experimenting, like you, in a new medium. (Yes, I was a cheerleader in High School)

The biggest joy for me is knowing that since I visually can't do art the way I used to be able to , I can at least enjoy seeing others' learning process. Besides, this sketchbook idea is helping a lot of other people too!

Re: Ros's learning watercolour journal

Tonights effort was another WDE 2 hour challenge.

I really should have attempted a 30 minute challenge to try to free up my brushwork and get a fresher appearance. I really admire artists who can paint with looseness and clean, clear colours. I’m still on that learning curve. One step forwards – two steps back. This week's WDE - a black labrador called Meg - photo ref by lotsofmoggies.

Re: Ros's learning watercolour journal

Ros, your last three entries are great! Like your trees - they look like trees and isn't that the idea? I think the sheep are just having a private moment away from the rest of the flock!!! Like the way you have left the whites and used them in the duck and guy post...it reads a bright sunny day! Really like the brown lab! Have owned a couple of them over the years and you've captured their soft look! Good work! Looking forward to seeing more...

Re: Ros's learning watercolour journal

Ros, Meg is adorable! Wonderful details of the eyes, nose and coloring. Well done using a looser effect and I bet that was an interesting experience!
