Re: Crafor's 100
#27 "Dave" 11x14" oil on canvas. Cross posting in portraiture forum. Worked on his left eye, cheek, and chin. Whited out his left cheek because what was there was so wrong. I feel like I'm failing on this layered painting, in large part because of the verdaccio layer was incorrect. There is still a lot to do. Hopefully this UGLY layer will be the base for a better next layer.
C&C welcome
Ella

Re: Crafor's 100
I think you are showing improvement, and it's good to see you sticking to it. You still seem to be struggling with tonality. I would concentrate on breaking down your lights and darks into distinct values across the greyscale. Maybe try some monochromatic studies using four values, a light, a light grey, a dark grey and a dark. No mixing further values on the canvas! Just place them accordingly and move on.

I agree with dirtysteev, I think you're getting better and personally, I want to commend you for sticking with it. This is the key to success. Dedication and sticking with it. I predict that we'll see some great things from you in the future.

Re: Crafor's 100
Unsatisfaction is often what causes us to find new ways and improve. Having said that I'm not sure u can see it but i think this is amazing. You've really managed to give him depth (a 3d look). I say keep going, love seeing the painting unfold.

Re: Crafor's 100
DirtySteev, Thanks for the suggestion. A trip to a more basic strategy and more practice on it will help. That is what I was working at here, but I didn't stop when I should have. Just HAD to add more!
Maybe even the “student palette” (2 earths and b+w ) which I did on post 59is a little advanced for me at this point. I have 4 or 5 values of greens mixed for straw hat man, so I will use them. Even with straw hat man, I didn't resist, and added more darks...
Maripos-art, thanks for your supportive comments. I couldn't have gotten this far without the help from this community. It is all appreciated.
Amrit, your words made me look closer. I did not see the depth, but now I catch a glimpse of it. I'm working for it, so I hope that I keep what is there, and add other clues. Thanks for your observation..
Wetbob, thanks for stopping in and commenting.
Your words are giving me encouragement. Thanks.

Re: Crafor's 100
Monday, June 11. There's a lot to do yet: [facial] hair, ear, and neck in particular. Crits and suggestions are welcome. I did a bit more gray in the beard area. I will probably not do anything to the background.

Re: Crafor's 100
Wednesday's version: The beard is far from done, and I don't know that I like what's there. His beard is thick, smooth, well kept. This looks thin and rough. I will let this dry, then I will add more white, maybe a thin coat with a broad brush-maybe a lot more individual hairs.
C&C welcome.

Re: Crafor's 100
#31 again--Terry, AKA Straw Hat Man. 16 x 20 oil on previously used canvas.
Finally got to spend some time on him. First layer of color. Used Arizona Brown, raw sienna, white. I worked to indicate and place features and some planes. Painted as thinly as I could, except for the streak of white over his nose and along it. His eyes aren't quite right, lips only indicated. I've had problems measuring-the features kept jumping around.
I've had a problem getting back to this (or starting a new one) as I don't understand how all this happens. How this goes from these darker colors to the lighter appropriate ones is a mystery to me. But I see a difference. I see more of Terry. Crits and comments welcome. X-posted to portrait forum, in Crafor's Dave

Re: Crafor's 100
Colleen, thanks, I will keep at it. I've seen what you have/are accomplishing with your work, and know I can do it too--as I keep at it.
100 paintings on the wall a 100 oil paintings, if 1 painting should happen to fall, put another painting on the wall!
Amrit, thanks for your ongoing encouragement. You help keep me going.
Mariposa, thanks to you too. I watched your portraits and just shake my head. So fluid, so well done. I study them to try to pick up some hints. I appreciate your support, too.
Thanks, all.
