Re: Dark Jug with Canteloupe and Grapes
I appreciate all the kind comments. I am glad you like the painting.
I thought you might find it interesting to see my set up before I tear it down in a few minutes. The grapes and real piece of canteloupe where not available for this image. I know you will understand they were transported out to our bird feeding area, but I substituted an artificial canteloupe piece I often use to set in for the real thing till I get things composed, then I get the real thing. The set up provides the visual cues, then I'm obligated to try and make it a painting. Thanks again for looking.

That's right Carol, they are not the same color. I am looking at the set up to tell me VALUE relationships, but, as an artist, I am free to make color decisions that may differ from what I'm actually seeing in the set up. Please remember color has value, so I must trust my color changes to still follow believable value relationships in my painting. I feel it is not my obligation as an artist to document the set up, but rather to dramatize it and embellish it. To me, that is what it is all about. Not necessarily copying my set up but using it to help me create what I am trying to say visually to my viewer.

What you said here Larry is what every artist needs to keep in mind. Copying should be banished. Create art and create a beautiful piece is what you have done here.

Re: Dark Jug with Canteloupe and Grapes
Beautiful painting! I love your handling of the lace/tatting. I am posting a xpost from oils that has a little lace in it, and I am in the middle of another with the same subject (part of a 100 challenge) Have any lace-based advice?

ktqt: My advise would be paint the form and not the detail. Leave a bit for the viewer's eye and imagination to complete. I put in a bit more detail if the lace is in or around the focal area, but less if it isn't. A little detail can go a long way.
