Hi and WELCOME to the watercolor forum

Your painting is a little pale so I am unable to see what is really going on....

Can you possibly post it again in a darker format?

Thumbs up

Needs more contrast, but I like the idea of the rock going out of the picture.

Darks, more darks!

Welcome Lyrali:

Your painting is coming along nicely. Check out Rod's turtorial on painting rocks in the Sticky Thread at the top of the page.
Here is the link

I found it very helpful . Keep on painting and posting and looking forward to more

Gail

Welcome aboard! Lovely painting.

There are a couple of things you could consider to help make those rocks more rocklike.

1. You could rewet the rocks and take a sponge and pat it against the rocks, this might make them a bit more textured.

2. You could take a rigger brush (a very fine brush) and make crevices in the rocks.

3. Cadmium colours tend to be opaque and since rocks are heavy creatures, this is a good opportunity to use more opaque rather than transparent colours.

Play with it, have fun.

Welcome Lyrali... Gail and Mary-Ann have given you good advice. There are many tutorials on this website that are very helpful, Rod's lesson on rocks being only one of them! Good luck and keep posting!!!

A second WIP - finished

Here's a painting that I finished this week. It's based on a photo I took of a plaza in San Juan, Puerto Rico back in 1977.

Hi Kathleen,

You have obvious drawing skills and are on the right lines, but the last painting came over very fuzzy and ill defined. It's well known that I am a fully paid up member of the CFA (control freaks anonymous ), but either your scanner or digital camera seems out of focus.

Everything is in its right place, the colours are OK, but it looks blurred to me.

What's the original like?

Doug

Actually, I guess you'd have to blame the digital camera operator - me - for the fuzziness and the late hour - 1 am - for not seeing how blurred it was before I posted the image.

I've retaken the photo:

Thanks for the info! One of these days when I win the lottery I'll have to get that program. Till then, I'll have to rely on PhotoStudio & ThumbsPlus.
