Re: Autumn in the Big Bend National Park

A friend here has announced he is driving 14 hours to meet a person driving 6 hours to sell him one of those SUP boards... This reminds me of my very recent trip west to meet a guy selling me a surfski...

When you really want to, you do the drive. But... do I really want to do it if snow might be in the equation? Global warming... is that gonna open the highways in early 2020... or close them?

I guess when someone has what you want, you go get it! David once drove to Minnesota to buy something. They wanted to get rid of it, so everyone ended up happy.

Climate change....change is the operative word...you canít know what to expect!

Re: Autumn in the Big Bend National Park

So... will the cartographers rename Iceland? Would that be allowed? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Any way to force your friends to make a decision on going to BBNP? Some sort of artistic arm twisting? Create a rumor that there are "big time, rich buyers working for a foreign mega museum" out camping along the river ?

That would work. You supply the rich buyers, I can deliver the artists.

Dang, no news on rebuilding the LaHarmonia Store; however I see a new notice that there will be road work occuring in BBNP from October through March. They mention delays and partial closures. Gasp. That's like being at home!

Have you had a look at Terlinguarentals.com? Teepees, rebuilt old huts and the like. They look interesting.

Re: Autumn in the Big Bend National Park

Oh, goody. Road construction. Another reason to get a jeep and hit the unpaved roads.

David has got his eye on a couple of rentals. One has an observatory!

Re: Autumn in the Big Bend National Park

Observatory !!!

Speaking of birds... I see that they have reintroduced the White Tail Eagle, (aka: Sea Eagle) into Scotland and are now trying it on the Isle of Wright. They look similar to our Bald Eagle but with an 8' wingspan, (!!!).

"Get a Jeep" = spend money... or hot wire a neighbors sons toy. I suspect the roads won't be that bad since they need to have visitors in the park. I don't think I've driven a Jeep since I had one issued to me for a while when I was in the service... about 60 years ago. It was okay but when it rained the pickup trucks looked pretty nice.

Re: Autumn in the Big Bend National Park

I hope the jeep isnít needed, but we might spring for it if roads are that difficult. It was so disappointing last year when we couldnít make it to the off-the-beaten-trail spots we wanted to visit.

That is one big bird. We actually have had bald eagles at White Rock (little urban lake about a mile away). I didnít see them there, but have spotted them on a river in central Texas.

Robyn:
Hot wiring a neighbors 4x4 might prove unacceptable. How about a pair of used dirt-bike motorcycles? Buy 'em... and sell them after you get back.

Jeep clubs... why not see if there is a Jeeper in a Dallas jeeping cub that would like to do BBNP but needs some one with gas money and a chase car in case the jeep breaks down...

We have Osprays and Bald Eagles coming and going at the lake I favor. Not so much this year though. Really neat when a Bald eagle flies past your boat about 20 feet away and almost at the water surface. Lots of interesting birds if you watch for them.

And those Canadian Geese.

Re: Autumn in the Big Bend National Park

WOW: I just happened on Facebook to see a notice from BBNP. They need to find a volunteer, (read or a couple) to help host the Rio Grande Village campgrounds in Big Bend NP. Someone got ill and can't do it. The training starts on October 21th '19 and the period you'd serve is from October 21th 2019 to January 31th, 2020... and it is extendable. You must have an RV to live in to do this.

Contact: [email protected] or call him at: 432 477 two three 56

Live in a remote area of the national park right on the river... but with a store, gas station and a laundromat...If I had an RV I'd be all over this.

Re: Autumn in the Big Bend National Park

On page 63 of this string I mention meeting a neighbor at the LaHarmonia Store just after arriving in BBNP. This was on October 13th 2018... last year.

Today while looking at the offerings of our neighborhoods "Little Library" box the same guy walks up and reminds me of meeting him there. John and his wife Judy were fortunate in that while they could not reserve a spot in the parks Lodge... they had called again at the last moment and there had been a cancelation. Not only did they get a place... it was one of the few original cabins and those are really sought after.

One of my Santa Elena Canyon watercolors is to hang in this years Kansas Watercolor Society show in Wichita, Kansas.
