Re: March 2011 Challenge- March Maddness!
Thanks everyone.
Sandra, if you are curious to know how i got the smoky/misty effect have a look on my blog (link in my signature line) There are several WIP posts as I was painting it where i described how the effect could be done.

Ona, thank you so much for the WIP. Wow, never knew watercolor works so well with just a few layers of color.
The first time I visited your site. Beautiful work you have!

Re: March 2011 Challenge- March Maddness!
Sandra, love your pink birds - at first I thought they were flamingos until I saw their short little legs. My favorite is the 3 Trings! Fun paintings!
Ona, what can I say? This painting is remarkable, and I really enjoyed watching your progress steps and how you managed all the smoky effects. Another winner for sure! If you were 'mad' to step out of your comfort zone, you need to keep taking more 'mad' leaps!
I've been playing with an abstract; actually this one has been through a couple of incarnations - it started out as a copy of Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed, and went south pretty fast. So, not wanting to waste a piece of good 300# paper, I started adding colors, and outlining tools I have in the studio for different shapes.
Not sure if it's done yet, we'll see - I haven't even decided which direction I like it best - but it's definitely 'mad'

MaryLou, beautiful colors and they piece so well together. Are these colors all straight from the tube or did you mix some? I could see two females bickering at each other.

Wow! Mary Lou, this is wonderfully colourful and is that some sort of spatula I can see in there? I can also see a checked belt and green buckle, maybe I am going mad

Mary Lou- that is just gorgeous- from any direction!! I LOVE it! What wonderful, fun colors! Makes me want to try something like that!! I have just not been into 'paint' lately but I could do something like that with watercolor pencils...hmmm....your large assortment of shapes as well as colors are just so wonderfully balanced too!

Re: March 2011 Challenge- March Maddness!
Thanks everyone!
Sandra, some of it is straight from the tube, but most of the colors are mixed or glazed; I keep adding to it and changing the shapes, adding darks... I don't see the women bickering, but I'm glad you can!
Jackie that belt buckle *was* the center of the Jimson Weed, and yep, that's a spatula - I think I need to break it up a little because it jumps out at me as a spatula...
I have John Salminen's DVD "A Designed Approach to Abstraction", and was trying to follow his design technique, but didn't leave enough white space; the values read okay... it's still a wip I think... but so far it's been fun...

Re: March 2011 Challenge- March Maddness!
Mary Lou- you make wonderful abstracts look like I want to jump in there and do them...but mine are always just terrible! I have seen that Salminen video, and he puts a lot more time in planning his abstracts than his realistic paintings! Really good ones like this are really hard work.
