Landscape ( 1800's ) - FINISHED

This painting is of no particular place, just a point in time of an era I am very fond of -

I begin with an initial sketch using thinned Raw Umber - This allows me to make whatever adjustments to the composition I feel are needed ... along with developing my lights and darks - I then begin laying in my colors very thinly, working all over the canvas ... the sky is the last thing I paint in -

Painting: Oil on canvas glued to hardboard, 12 x 16; Palette: Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Indian Red, Raw Umber, Terre Verte, Ultramarine Blue and Cremnitz -

All comments and suggestions most welcome -

Thank you for viewing - Hud

Latest work - Still much more to do ... need to develop the trees, sky and water more ... plus general maintenance all over - Thinking about adding a figure ... have not decided where yet -

Comments and suggestions always welcome -

Thanks for viewing - Hud

It's so enjoyable to see your process, Hud. Thank you for explaining your method. I really like this composition. The eye moves all around. Beautiful series of colors coming into play, now, too. Looking wonderful!

The earth colors really added the wow factor to this atmospheric work, Hud. It has also an old world feel to it.

Re: Landscape ( 1800's ) - WIP

I did not like the way this painting was developing ... to closed in and dark - So, I scraped on the big trees opening them up some and am now repainting them - Completely took out the near tree ( did not like it at all ) ... decided to develop an old grey tree that has survived the ravages of time on that rock pile -

Have roughed in the distant mountains; working on the sky; added a figure walking up the road to the cabin and continuing the development of the water - Overall, as you can see, I have opened up and lightened the scene ... I like it better this way -

Thank you for viewing - Hud

Fantastic idea of opening up that big tree - I agree it closed it in too much - beautiful painting!
