Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

I was sent some materials by Zebra pens to try and then send feedback to the company on how they work in my plein air sketching. I tried a sent of pre-filled fountain pens with colored inks. They had some interesting colors and effects. I was hoping for an earth toned color but there wasn't one. I also included the whole page so you can see how I composed the page.

Our portrait group met last week and Dimitri posed for us. He has such a great head of hair with an asymmetrical cut.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

The Patchogue Sketch Club had horses for a theme on Wednesday. Several members brought in model horses for us to work from, but I was drawn to this sculpture of Old Paint that had belonged to the uncle of one of the members. He looked like he needed some love. I also sketched this small horse that was purchased in Sweden.

We had about a half inch of snow the other day. I ran out to do a quick gouache while there was still a bit of snow that hadn't melted. This was done in a small, 4 x 6 blue toned Strathmore Multimedia pad.

Otherworlder and Doug, thanks so much. At this point if I don't sketch something each day I feel like something is missing. Sometimes I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. lol

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

We were expecting nasty weather today so I made sure I went out yesterday to sketch. I ended up down at a small beach along the bay on the east end. I was the only one there sitting in my mobile studio while I worked. When I finished I headed into Jamesport, the nearest town to get a coffee and a treat. It was a cute shop so of course I sketched it.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

Your people in surroundings seem to be coming along nicely, looking far more proportionally accurate. I have to say, the volume of sketching you get done is incredible. Wish I had the time to get that much sketching in, I probably spend too much time on the forums.

I really enjoyed looking through your sketches! The ones from the Transit Museum really appealed to me. The USk group here meet regularly in our museum and I really must meet up with them this year. and I love your painting of Artists Lake.

Delo - Thanks. Retirement has a plus side...lots of time to create.

Kay - Thank you. You should definitely join up with the USk group. It is a lot of fun to sketch with other people.

Maria - Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoy the stories.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

The first sketch was done of the foliage and dunes locally.

I do sketches for the Scavenger Hunts here at WetCanvas. This one included several things that were listed for that week.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

I will be participating in a "Portrait Party" next weekend. It involves doing many 10 minute sketches which need to be large and visible from about 20 feet away. I've been doing some practice to see what materials I should use. For this group I set my timer for 10 minutes, sketched quickly with pencil to get the general shape, refining the sketch with Tombow markers, and finally adding watercolor washes. The paper I used is cheap sketch paper not meant for watercolors, so it wrinkles quite a bit.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

Last Tuesday my sketch group had Gerri as a model. I did one quick practice sketch of her (10 minutes), then a regular watercolor of her, and then another quick sketch.
