Re: Landscape Practice Sketchbook

Haven't updated this thread for a while, but I have been practicing! Some total failures, some successes, and I definitely feel I'm learning a lot from both.

This month I've been trying to focus on simplifying, and also thinking about colour. I can see clearly myself where I went wrong on the total failures so I won't bother posting those. Here are some of the better ones (all watercolour pencils and watercolour paint on NOT):

Not so happy with these ones, but but I don't think they're total disasters.

Lovely sketches Claudia, yes, it is a bit intimidating to start out in ink, a few light pencil guide lines can help.

Re: Landscape Practice Sketchbook

Nice sketches.
I like the third andd last ones, mainly because of their light, and colour choices.
Keep on

Re: Landscape Practice Sketchbook

I really like your sketchers. You manage to catch the view with a few lines. I have difficulties with too much detail.

Re: Landscape Practice Sketchbook

Thanks for your comments folks. I really do appreciate your feedback and suggestions. It's so useful and interesting to get viewpoints from different eyes and minds (like Maria preferring the ones I thought were perhaps too colourful - now I know maybe I can afford to be a little more adventurous with colour. Very helpful.)

Oh gosh, if left to my own devices I have HUGE difficulty with getting too fussy and detailed! It was driving me mad - that's why I am focusing really hard on simplification at the moment.

Often times I do a 1st attempt which is too fussy, so then I look at it and see what I can do to simplify, then do it again (and again and again, if it's still bad!) I'm hoping if I keep practicing, it will become natural.

Here are my 2nd and 3rd attempts at another scene (the 1st was so bad it got recycled!) I'll still probably try to simplify it down more.

Claudia these sketches are amazing! Are you sketching from photo references or en plein air? These are some glorious vista, seems like places I would love to visit, lol.

I applaud your stick-to-it ness and redoing a scene to try to simplify. I like #3 particularly the marks in the foreground at the bottom right

Re: Landscape Practice Sketchbook

it's going beautifully not too simplified - I think things lose a sense of place and interest, become shallow, if the simplification goes too far. THe textures etc are still there

Do you know the work of Sue Lewington? - worth looking her up if you don't

Re: Landscape Practice Sketchbook

Thank you all again for your ongoing input. I've never had any art lessons and don't interact with any arty people in real life, so your comments are really valuable to me! Any tips or advice are really welcome.

Vivien - I'd not heard of Sue Lewington before, but just googled her and absolutely love her work (and I've visited lots of the places she paints in Cornwall and Devon). Thanks so much for mentioning her - very inspirational for me.

All these are from photos. I'd love to go places and sketch outdoors but I've got health problems now which make it difficult.

I prefer to use photos of local places here in Sussex, or familiar places I've visited or lived in the past, like Wales, Cornwall, the Lakes District, Yorkshire Dales. That way I have vivid memories of the place (smells, atmosphere etc), which is as close as I can get to actually being there while I sketch.

Here are my better efforts from the last week or so (watercolour and coloured pencils):

I'm quite pleased with this one. It's hard to know if I'm really making progress though as my overall standard is so inconsistent - I still have so many total failures!

They are lovely Claudia, don't worry if your paintings vary, it is inevitable and affects all of us. The last one is excellent.
