Cycle of Nature

Title: Cycle of Nature
Year Created:
Medium: Oil
Surface: Linen
Dimension: 18 x 24
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

I usually have some forms of nature in my work. Some is unconscious but the birds are conscious and birds are usually the main subjects in my work. I like combining all kinds of things.....you can see.....different shapes along with some more semi-real items. The photo is a little off....IRL is richer, bit darker.

I would like comments on whatever you choose. I have a graphic, printmaking background which may be there in the drawing-type areas. I do find color difficult so if you think the colors are way off.....basically thank you for any input.

Can this please be moved to the Structured Critique? I tried over and over to select that but it kept defaulting to Open Critique. Thank you!

Re: Cycle of Nature

Hello Forestgrass,

For me the colours work beautifully. The bird on the left commands most of my attention. It's sort of photo-bombing the rest of the composition which is done in a more structured way, like a matrix of objects around the same size, same values, and not touching one another (versus the big bird overlapping the square). Despite the chaos it has a nice harmony.

If it was mine, I would have brought more of the big bird into the painting. Also I would overlap some of the other objects and create more planes.

There is a nice balance between the large and smaller birds as if they are just beginning to notice one another. I also like the calming treatment of the birds and the softness together with the colour harmonies. Not as crazy about the black objects and the shadow that suggests a dinosaur - it brings into the painting a bit of negative vibe, unless you are making a statement and this is intentional.

Overall lovely.
