Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

This morning was gloomy but eventually things improved. I did a bit of work on my panels and taped the paper for today onto my plexiglass drawing boards.

Eventually I went out and once at my first site I changed my mind and painted something else on a piece of the hot press paper. That worked well.

Then i scouted some more. A bit fustrated with the access and parking at a place I liked. Eventually came home and dug out my 2 wheel cart, tomorrow being another day.

Three ideas for tomorrow. Lets see what if anything actually gets done!

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

Drove to the arboretum and hauling my outfit on the 2-wheeler cart I did two pieces by eleven o'clock. One each on rough and hot press papers. The second piece is for a challenge STEMS has this year. It was fun but by late morning it was obvious that the weather was going to soon turn sour.

It has rained pretty much since early afternoon and the forecast is thunder storms until tomorrow evening. !!!!

I have mounted more paper on the plexiglass and am ready to go back out when the rain ends. Wednesday looks good.

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

Hi:
I wrote a long reply earlier but Wetcanvas locked up somehow when I posted it.

Rain today. Another piece in my cars back seat... a pen drawing with washes on hotpress.

Challenge is now framed and ready to hand in Friday. Challenge is to paint in arboretums rail road garden.

Tomorrow should be good for painting... then a week of rain !!!!

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

Two pieces today, one on each of hot press and rough paper. It got hot and so I headed home for a late lunch and a nap. It started raining around 3pm. I have 7 pieces total now and can only enter 3 so the pressure is off !

Tomorrow I'm unsure what the weather will do but generally the next week is rain on and off. If I get the chance I'll paint some more... I have 3 stamped sheets of paper left.

Now that the pressure is off you will paint even better, if the weather cooperates. Lots of time left to pour resin, too.

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

Hi all:

I have cut off new work for STEMS as the acrylic resin flowing will take time... glueing to panels, (started tonight), several sealing sprays, pouring resin and 48 hours of curing. Cleaning up edges, etc. I'm going to need almost a week due to drying and curing times. They are due by next thursday afternoon.

Overland Park is a large area but only three miles of driving brings me to the historic business center.

The RR Challege and the artist party have been moved to an indoor location due to probable rains. No rain yet today but it looks as if it will soon.

So... with 6 pieces and only being allowed to enter a maximum of 3... how to select them? I set up to have it voted on. every one selected to be in the lucky 3 was awarded 2 points and if it was selected to be a 4th or alternate piece it received 1 point. Then I voted, had my bride vote, went to 4 homes of neighbors and had them vote. So, 8 opinions. Top score possible was 16 then.

The most popular 3 had 12, 11 & 10 votes respectively. The 4th was a tie at 8 votes and I had my bride select that one. The lowest ranked piece had 7 votes.

Tonight I used the Golden Matt Gel to glue these top 4 to panels. Had some problems with paper buckling a little with the gel but clamped sheets of plexiglass down over the paper with a dozen clothes pins each. Not sure when I can proceed but likely tomorrow some time.

If you suspect I don't really know what I'm doing... yup!

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

Sprayed the top 4 with Krylon UV blocking gloss... 5 times. Then found a few loose edges and reglued those. Made protective "tents' from cartons. Discovered the resin wants 72 hours, not 48, to reach a final hard cure state.

The party tonight was shortened a bit when a nasty T-storm blew in at 7PM. My entry did not manage to be selected for the purchase award. Nuts!

Next is the pouring of the resin... I'm a bit nervious.

I have to say that the wax process is much quicker, no mess and instantly dry Dave.
