Re: A Fist Full of Pencil Shavings

Thanks Debby & Vhere. Yes, it's a Welsh poem by Dafydd ap Gwilym. I don't speak the language, but apparently the English translations lose a lot of the nuance.

Some quick warm up scribbles...

"Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge...." The Princess Bride.

Great sketches of fencers in motion.

Love the birds as well as the step back in time movie characters. Both are wonderful!

Re: A Fist Full of Pencil Shavings

Thanks for your interest, guys.

Debby: "Inconceivable!"

My cheap old scanner has finally decided to pack up on me, so I'm having to photograph pages for the time being.

Re: A Fist Full of Pencil Shavings

You have beautiful control over pencils/graphite! Lovely

A thought on the previous comments about the sketches looking 'dark' or doom and gloom - I had to think of the artist Zdzislaw Beksinski whose works also look dark, scary, grim, that kind of vibe, but apparently he says some were actually more optimistic or even humorous! I personally think a lot of interpretation comes from the spectator themselves (Oscar Wilde: ".. those who read the symbol do so at their own peril, those who go beneath the surface do so at their own peril..").. anyway just a thought I had Beksinski's works are fantastic, if you haven't seen them, check them out

Re: A Fist Full of Pencil Shavings

Boy, where has this month gone. I've been tied down with work (not necessarily a bad thing), but now I think my cat may have cancer. Just waiting for the results, and not really in the mood to pick up a pencil at the moment.

Anyway, I wanted to respond, but don't like doing so without posting at least something, so here's half of a double spread I started about two weeks ago. Hopefully I'll be fired up again soon. Cheers.

Aiylah: Thanks for the encouraging words. Oh, yes, I really love Beksinski's work. I have definitely seen humour in some of his pieces. Other works even I find slightly unsettling, but I feel that as good sign. The calibre of his work is so good and thought provoking. It's beautiful to me.

Debby: Cheers. And yes, I don't think that word means what I think it means, haha. But then again, I haven't quite been myself after an encounter with the... SHREAKING EELS! Or maybe the Cliffs of Insanity done my brain in?

Joan: Thanks. I do like sketching rocks. A weak spot of mine, if you will.

Re: A Fist Full of Pencil Shavings

Thanks for the well wishes Debby and Vhere. My cat, Rufus (aka Snodgrass, Boddington Boy, Bosley Chap (don't ask )), seems to be on the mend. The lump on his back did contain cancerous cells, but it has been removed and the veterinary surgeon was confident there's no malignant condition.

Here's a pic' of him when he was still half doped up on whatever they gave him. I make no apologies for posting it. I've already sent it to everyone and their grandmother, so I see no reason why you guys should get away.

As far as I'm concerned, a happy cat equates to a happy household!

Next update will be back to it. Promise.

So glad the kitty is ok. The picture would make a lovely reference photo.
