Kay, Magdalena was known as Trails End. There was a spur of railroad there for coal, lead and zinc mining. The Trails End refers mostly to the cattle drives. There was a fenced driveway from around Springerville, AZ, to Magdalena over 100 miles long. The ranchers drove cattle and sheep to the train for shipping on to market. The driveway was a few miles wide in areas and the cattle would feed on the way and not lose any weight for shipping on the train. When the train quit coming, they still used the stockyards for shipping by trucks, then the trucks started going directly to the ranches and now it is abandoned. I painted this a few years ago. Shipping season in October was a really big deal in the area. All the ranchers convened in Magdalena. Fun!

Hud, I really like your take on the house. I love the rich colors, looks more like northern New Mexico than where the house is, with superb rendering. I want to go there!

Hi, all y'all. Thanks on the stockyard painting. It is a watercolor, the only one I ever did for show and it sold. It was about 12 x 16 inches. I think it was more than 15 years ago. I haven't been by to check the stockyards out in a few years, I will check this summer and see if they are still there. The railroad is long gone.

Re: June Monthly Challenge - Welcome to All!

Hud, this is wonderful! I smiled when I read about your reasons for the color choices. I think this is a fantastic way to use up those old paints. Much better than letting them grow dry in the tubes. It's very vivid. The little pop of blue in the left tree trunk is a nice touch. Well done!

Jo, I really love the stockyard painting! We have a similar thing here, though on a much tinier scale. The NFO (National Farmers Organization) Collection Point, which is very close to where I live. It's very small, but a similar thing. It is still in use today, and many of our cattle have gone by way of "the Point". Anyway, I really like your painting, and am happy it sold for you. Thanks for sharing!

Jenna: It's vivid for sure ... thinking about hanging it above the coffee pot for my "early morning jolt" ... probably would eliminate a cup or two -

Thank you for viewing and commenting -

Re: June Monthly Challenge - Welcome to All!

Jenna: Nice little ink drawing. I really like the colour combo of blue and brown.
Kay: Interesting to see the drawing and then the added watercolour. Great work and colours.
Christel: Awe, your fawn is so cozy in his camouflage bed.
CaliAnn: Just beautiful. I've heard about the aquaboard but haven't tried it yet. After your explanation of being able to wash it off just makes me want to try it more.
Jo: Beautiful pastel landscape. Those yellow flowers take you right through to those beautiful hills.
Hud Wow, that's colour! Great way to use up old paint, very successfully.
