The Importance of Negative Space

Negative contribute to the overall appearance of the composition. Some times we might tend to ignore these spaces however, they are of equal importance.

Negative spaces are those spaces that tend to surround the main objects of our painting.

Paying attention to the negative shapes as well as the objects will help us to check on the accuracy of our observations. Observing the different sizes and shapes, both positive and negative, and how they relate to one another, helps us to more accurately depict what we see.
