Rose Bowl WIP

Hi there....this isn't really a WIP. It is however the first half of the painting I am titling "Rose Bow" I will endeavor to try to remember to do the second half in stages for posting.

It will be about 8 x 10 or perhaps 8.5 x 10 when completed
La Carte Pastel Card

His is the 'dark half' of the piece.

Cheers, Dianna

Re: Rose Bowl WIP

Thank you all. How nice to see some new faces here as well as our friendly 'old timers'.

On second look....this is not quite as garish as it appears in the photo. A little too much compensation in Photoshop to compensate for the incandescent lights.

Cheers, Dianna

Re: Rose Bowl WIP

Ah...some more familiar faces and old friends. Thanks for your kind comments once again.

Well, one more rose done. We are finally getting into the sunshine here. I had to do much layering in the shadowed roses to get the appropriate tones and those of you who know my work...that is not my style.

Well, time for some breakfast now.

Cheers, Dianna

Re: Rose Bowl WIP

Diana - what a beautiful painting! I'm wondering about your process. You seem to work to a finish level in each spot before moving on to the rest of the painting. So many classes I've taken say to work the whole painting at once. How do you do this so well and get everything in balance working in this way?

Lynn

Re: Rose Bowl WIP

Hi Lynn. Thanks so much for stopping by.

Yes, I paint and teach my students to complete one section at a time. All artists work differently and myself, I stand a chance of making a mess when painting the total painting in layers. You know...dust sliding down the page and hands plopped down on completed work.

As for the ability to do so, the trick is to see colour....really SEE colour and paint what you see not what you think you see. The hardest tendency to conquer is choosing values lighter than what are actually there. If you have a problem with that...then just punch a hole in two 2" squares of white or black paper and lay the holes over both the resource colour and the colour you are applying. They should match in value if not in tone.

It's also a matter of keeping all of your active pastels in a tray so that you are always choosing the same colours throughout the entire painting. If you wish to, you can go back in and introduce a new colour to a finished area should it not read right or you just want to add a little spice but generally mine are finished once I leave an area.

Thanks for your interest. Cheers, Dianna
