Re: "Why?", a WIP

hello
a very sensible formulation ;
with the exception of yellow or ochre , which are likely to be used as high-key tones for highlights ,
the rest of the colour wheel is there , and muted just enough to subdue strong saturations which are often part of many sets/brands .

there are other makers who give attention/sets about grays , so ,
i'm not advocating any brand , but rather the concept .

anyway , looking forward to your next post of this WIP .

Ed

Thanks Ed. The gray set works well with the skin tone set. You do have to add other colors, though it's a great base to start out with. I like Giraults for portraits, they handle very well and have a great texture/consistency (for me anyway).

Thanks Jen! With the holidays it's a bit slow, but I'll get there.

Re: "Why?", a WIP

Finally getting around to updating this thread. I found a chunk of time to devote to this, though I'll admit it doesn't seem like I've done much. The wrinkles are quite the challenge, getting the values right so they are not too harsh is proving a big challenge. I find myself staring at this more than I'm painting, that seems to be a common approach with many of my paintings.

I think this is an accurate representation of the colors, taking a good photograph is always a challenge for me. Good thing we don't use film anymore, I'd be through a few rolls by now

The right side of her face (our right side) going back probably needs to be a bit darker and cooler so it recedes better. The shadow on our right side of her chin (her left) is looking a bit harsh, it needs tweaking. I also think our left side (her right) of her mouth needs a bit of a tweak, not there yet either. I also think our left (her right) eye might need more subtle shadows underneath. Not quite right either, but at least I'm on my way..... tweak, tweak, tweak......

If anybody's is interested, I've posted all the steps so far for this painting on my blog.

Ooh, I wondered what had happened to this one Chris! Glad you're progressing with it again.
She already looks so alive...even if you didn't lay down another stroke.
The skintones are lovely, they glow!
You are so disciplined with your portraits, unlike me, all over the place!

Yeah, it is good to see you working on this again, Chris! Those skin tones are so luminous. You are so skilled at letting those colors show through from one layer to the next. I like the wrinkles too - they look real and not like they are carved in stone.

Re: "Why?", a WIP

So good to see you working on this again Chris, I have been waiting for an update! It is already stunning, you just have that special touch that make the skintones come alive. You'll get it all together, no doubt about it. I love the eyes, so expressive and beautiful, and that blue collar works really well to bring the eyes forward! I find wrinkles hard too, a lot of tweaking to make them look natural - a challenge for sure....but you'll nail it...I'll be watching your process!

The wrinkles have started giving her such character. Amazing fine work on the wrinkles on the neck.

Amazing work. I am teaching pastels at Summer School. I will show this to them today. I have been showing the Wetcanvas site to them and suggest they hook up. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful.
