The ‘Go figure’ threads have been a lively part of the Figure Forum since 2008 and are a good way to keep in touch with whats going on, not necessarily just about the figure, but anything that is of interest or that is going on in the world, and/or our lives in particular (a kind of the ‘facebook’ of the Figure Forum)

Some of the old threads make good reading

The last thread from 2018 can be found here and previous threads can be found in the Library here.

Last weekend I went to the NGA (National Gallery of Australia) to see the Pre-Raphaelite masterpieces from the Tate, which they had called LOVE AND DESIRE. I went through the Tate when I was in the UK over 3 years ago, and only recall seeing a few of the works on display here.

As the NGA is in Canberra, it’s not often I go there, but this was an organized bus trip which makes it much easier not having to drive for nearly eight hours, get lost, find parking, use over a tank of petrol etc…. and I get to see all of the Gallery plus the National Portrait Gallery ( I was pleased to see my friend Evert Pleog has 5 or 6 portraits on display at the moment in the NPG!

I will consider going to see the Monet exhibition coming there later in the year.

Looks like that is worth a trip, Mac! I am a fair bit closer to Canberra than you- haven’t been to this exhibition, yet!

Last time I was at the Portrait gallery- there was a group of pre-schoolers sitting in front of the Debra Mailman portrait having a talk with a teacher. I sent the photo to Evert for a laugh!

Glad you enjoyed Mac. Birmingham Art Gallery has a large collection of Pre Raphelite but I was dissapointed how little was on display. Still, we have Leonardo coming to Galleries all over England next month:)

Bethany I had heard of an exhibition of 20 artists and 20 well known people to celebrate 20 years of the Gallery(20/20 celebrating 20 years of the NPGA) I didn’t see it there and presumed it had finished… but when I looked up this link I see it is still on until Feb8th

Evert was in that one as well, here are some of his that you may or may not have seen… on display as well as the Debra Mailman one

Dave I guess they can’t display everything they have in their storerooms, I guess that is why when we go along there is often something displayed that you haven’t seen before!

I’d love to see a Leonardo exhibition too!

Thanks for the reminder, Mac. I have seen photos of them all as I am Evert’s fb friend as well. The second one I saw in person as it was in the Archibald a few years ago.

I finally got to visit the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition at the Birmingham Museum and Art gallery last weekend. There are 12 simultaneous exhibitions throughout the country, each featuring 12 drawings and diagrams from the Queens Collection and culminating in a major exhibition of 220 works in May, staged in London. I was totally blown away and actually had tears in my eyes at one point, looking at the masters works. A tree not much more than 2 inches high in one chalk image was so finely drawn it was impossible to understand how he could do this with equipment 500 years old. I will be back soon and I’ll be in London in May combining it with another exhibition of Renaissance work at the same time.

        Hi, all!

Wow — thanks for posting up all that great art, Mac! Great photos! I saw that Waterhouse and the Holman Hunt — both a few years ago when there was a big Holman Hunt show on at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, and when there was a big Waterhouse show at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal. Loved both shows and went to see the Waterhouse show 3 times (Montreal is just 2 hours away from Ottawa.)

Some news that you may have already heard:

I just found out that F + W Media — which owns Wetcanvas (along with other things) has filed for bankruptcy.

Here is the link to a thread about it here on WC:

It is a fantastic trhead (and thanks for the links to the past years that I will like to recover) very interesting, I haven’t been to an exhibition for a long time, actually it happened to me on a few occasions, I’m sorry.
I don’t think it’s the same thing, (maybe I’m off topic, in that case I apologize) but one of the last films I saw at the cinema was Loving Vincent, a beautiful film, animated in the style of Vincent, his paintings that come to life. (the animations were done by hand, they are painted, if I understood correctly about half of the film is shot like this, this images alternate perhaps with flashbacks filmed in another way, I believe with the actors in flesh bones that act however the shot is edited because the effect is similar to that of the paintings also in these scenes)
From IMDb: “In a story depicted in oil painted animation, Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist.” ”
If it happens to you if you haven’t seen it before, I can recommend it, I think you’ll like it, but I think it’s interesting, especially the bill, the animations make it an experiment, a movie I loved to see,
The last thing I saw in the art world is always a Cézanne movie – Portraits of a Life, it’s a documentary about an exhibition about his portraits of people, I think this one also came out in some cinemas but I don’t know the spread and the period, a year ago or 2 I believe, I saw it at home, interesting, it will have been a good show, it will be because I believe it has moved to other cities and nations, the assumption and that Cezanne’s exhibitions are often centered on his still lifes which are his trademark,
the film, instead, talks about the exhibition of portraits by Cézanne (which are many and were collected for this exhibition), initially inaugurated at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in 2017.
In reality Lately I had learned of an exhibition and I had thought of going there which was a couple of hours from me and was on Rembrandt (i love Rembrandt), on Rembrandt’s engravings, they exhibited 30 of his engravings.

                a greeting, good Sunday

A few weeks ago a street art event was organized with the collaboration of the Hawkesbury Council and our Hawkesbury Communty Arts Workshop. The idea was for a number of locations from the Windsor Mall along George Street to the Regional Gallery to have artists do Chalk Art on them. and was promoted as ‘Chalk On George St’

The Chalk was provided (mostly a chalky pastel) and we submitted ideas of what we could do at the allocated locations.

I was going to do a large indigenous face, (rough sketch here) and this was enthusiastically approved of, but then at almost at the last minute they said ‘don’t do it’ as they were worried it might be controversial… could I do something else!

I finished up doing a larger version of a face that I had previously painted, so I had confidence that I could do it… but I wasn’t sure how the colours would go onto the surface of the wall which was a low sheen paint on a fairly roughly textured surface. (the aboriginal face would have been ideal for it!)

It didn’t turn out too bad considering, and everyone seemed impressed (I guess because large freehand faces are not very common)
