I did a test of Derwent Lightfast Colored pencils for the colored pencil forum.
They only put out 36 colors and the other 36 are coming out this year.
I ordered the Derwent Lightfast pencils and thought I would give you my thoughts, although I am mostly an acrylic and oils painter. I’m enjoying my journey into colored pencils. I have a full set of Polychromos, and schpirerr farbens.
I set up a small still life for this: the size is about 9×11 on stonehenge.
The background (wall is in gouache to save time…….lazy?).
To be pure: no solvents and only burnishing, no other colors from other sets, only the Derwents.
My first thought was DARN, I need more colors to make this look good, but I hung in there. Can’t wait til’ they put out the other 36 colors.
Colors are earthy. Scarlet and Sun yellow seem to be the only really vibrant colors. I was wishing for a good cobalt or cerulean blue.
The colors blend really well and layer beautifully. The white is amazing and covers better than the polychromos white.Cheers, Derek

Nice mastery of those materials.
I tried them once and chucked them away in frustration.I only regret not drinking more champagne -

I don’t think using gouache is lazy, do what works for you! Nothing wrong with mixing media if it gets you where you want to go. Love the brown jar in the back, lovely reflections and the lid is fresh, not overworked. The bottom of the yellow jar on the right is vey awkward – where the purple is on the right is misshapen.

You know me better than to do anything misshapen.
What you see is debris in the bottom of this old antique bottle. Also there are times when the actual glass bottoms were wonky in the old making-process.
I collect them and often the stuff in the bottoms is some kind of gunk that will never come out.Hi Bill, Thanks my friend.

I have been thinking about trying some colored pencils after seeing what can be done with them. This might just push me to click the buy button.
I have been gathering old bottles and glass sherds for decades so the look of that bottle is familiar to me. Years ago as a kid, I got to explore an old dugout earth and timber roofed store / trading post out in the desert. There had been a fire and the roof caved in long before I arrived. There were so many interesting bits and pieces all around. Old silverware, whiskey and medicine bottles, sherds of fine English china, rusted pocket knives, parts of guns and more.
March 16, 2019 at 4:52 pm #796841Thanks Contu…..hint hint, if you get the oil based ones you just might be able to work some oil paint magic over them….:clear:
