I am having a hard time finding a great umbrella. And i don’t want to waste my money on umbrellas claiming to be the ”best” for plein air. I have been looking at golf umbrellas….some of them look to be perfect for plein air painting. Has anyone used golf umbrellas for plein air on this site, who can give their take on them?

September 19, 2018 at 6:05 pm #697358I haven’t tried a golf umbrella. I’ve been trying to find an ideal solution to this for years. I do have a Jullian umbrella which I don’t use and found it to be more cumbersome than practical. I like the look of the guerilla-painter one but they are not available here.
In the hot and bright sun I will try to paint as close to my vehicle as possible and use that for shade, and sometimes hang a dropsheet over the back tailgate.

September 19, 2018 at 7:01 pm #697360Thanks Mac for the info, I was going to buy a guerrilla umbrella, but the ground spike is very small, and I have seen in reviews it rips over very easily. I thought of ordering my own ground spike and all would be fine. Upon looking further into the matter I found that black is not the ideal color for an umbrella, it’s actually white, Richard Schmid claims and I quote, “ using a black umbrella most feel like painting in a dark closet “. Which leads me to a whole other topic, if Schmid recommends white, why are so many plein air umbrellas black!??

September 21, 2018 at 11:04 am #697364I found an inexpensive golf umbrella that mimics all but the clamp on the GP model. Silver reflective on the outside, black absorbing on the inside, and slotted at the top for wind to keep it from becoming a parachute.
The issue is how to clamp it to your pochade OR how to spike it into the ground. To make it suitable for that you just cut off the foam handle to expose the carbon fiber shaft. Whatever you can find to attach to that will do the trick.
My friend found a large metal augur style spike, fitted that into a length of pipe and fits the umbrella into that. Works great on any soft ground or sand (if you use tie lines.)
September 21, 2018 at 12:15 pm #697369i bought a versa brella to use on a trip to Maui – only to discover it was too long to fit in a suitcase. The multi-position joints work well – but every angle reduces the height – so that limits its usefulness.

STUDIOBONGOSeptember 21, 2018 at 5:06 pm #697368I usually attach my umbrella to an extra tripod I take, or a studio light stand, but have been toying with the idea of one of these instead. They hold up pretty well to the wind. Just bungee cord the umbrella to the upright shaft if it won’t clamp on the smaller diameter of the shaft. You will need a sledge hammer to drive it into hard ground.

October 10, 2018 at 1:43 pm #697370was watching a Jame Gurney youtube video where he shows some of his homemade diffusers for plein-air and was reminded of this thread.

STUDIOBONGOOctober 19, 2018 at 8:12 am #697362I swear by the Best Brella. I have the white one.
I also have the big Shade Buddy that you drive into the ground. It is great if it is raining or for drawing excursions when I don’t take an easel. I got it first but it won’t fit in any suitcase!

http://Instagram.com/laurahopkinsfineartOctober 19, 2018 at 4:12 pm #697367Sometimes Judson’s has the various Guerilla umbrellas on sale as “seconds” I’ve bought two, the standing one that goes in the ground and a clamp on and I haven’t found any of the cosmetic defects they say the seconds have.
I did get paracord, tent spikes and carabiners to attach to the pole of the standing umbrella to stabilize it in case of wind but haven’t used it yet beyond a test set up in the yard. It came with a carrying case. They have one now for $78.
I originally bought the standing one as I didn’t want any wind taking out my umbrella also taking out my easel if they were attached. I wouldn’t take it on a plane but it fits in the car with the rest of my gear. I eventually bought a Best Buddy chair on sale or as a second. When I did I also bought a clamp on umbrella as a second but they are sold out right now.

October 22, 2018 at 12:41 pm #697359I would advise against the golf umbrella. They have nice features, but the light passes through them and it can influence your palette in a negative way. A black and white one may be okay, but I don’t know. I once made the mistake of carrying a golf umbrella with alternating red and white panels, and the red cast on my palette was horrible. I couldn’t use it.
January 6, 2019 at 8:12 pm #697371I have three; one black-white …and a pair of red-white and green-white that balance each other. It gets too hot under an all-black in bright sun…

January 9, 2019 at 10:06 pm #697365The “golf umbrella” that I bought looks and seems to work exactly like the expensive Guerrilla Painter and other commercial “painting umbrellas”. It was inexpensive and is sturdily built. It’s got the slots to let wind pass through enough to prevent it being a sail, just like GP. And it is reflective silver on the outside, which you want, and black non-reflective on the inside, which you also want.
Only issue is that it does not come built with nor to couple with those nifty gooseneck mounts like the GP version. It’s a hand held unit, so it isn’t long enough to punch into the ground like the GP version. So you have to adapt it to either a flexible mount for your tripod/chair or to stake into the ground. Still very cheap compared to the painting specific models. YOu can buy heavy duty augur tips to “drill” your stand into the ground on eBay, and with a bit of ingenuity and some PVC or aluminum pipe you can make a stand for it. So again, you can get a great setup for FAR less if you can DIY just a bit.
As an alternative I just bought one of those versa-brellas. Not sure the regular size I bought is big enough, and they do have a larger size. I’ll report when I’ve tried it out.
January 10, 2019 at 4:30 am #697366I have to second the reply about the Guerilla umbrellas as seconds. I have two, and they came with all the needed hardware and extras. I got them on clearance for $30 each. I can find no defects in either one.
March 15, 2019 at 4:08 pm #697357I have almost all the art umbrellas made. After using them, the only umbrella to buy for painting on location is the BestBrella
