La belle ferronniere

I am having a go at Leonardo's La belle ferronniere , has anybody got any info on his palette for this beauty .



Any other help will be much appricated thanks .

Good luck... I love this painting and it is on my list of "things to copy".

I can't help with the palatte except that i would assume mostly earth colours. With perhaps one of the lead yellows.

Not sure about the red, it looks so rich.

I think you are right about the earth colours i hadn't thought about lead yellows thanks for that .

Hi, I'm no expert, but looking at the image you've provided, I would say that the colours are not correct. After doing abit of research, I would say the gown is probably Terra Rossa or Venetian Red, Red Oche or similar. Like I said, the image makes the red look far too rich, if you wanted it to look this way, I would use Alizarin Crimson & Cadmium Red Deep.

Hi everyone , well i have started ,it is the first time i have painted anything like this so it is all new to me but i am enjoying it very much any C and C would be welcome .

First the drawing



First layer of paint mixed with low odour thinner.



And where i am at now .



I am going to build up the layers using liquin and see where it takes me i know it looks nothing like her now but i hope in time it will .

Hi, Can't wait to see what you do with this. I am doing a copy of a slightly earlier portrait (still Italian renaissance though)

Advice is so difficult to give as everyone likes to work in a different way. I am not very experienced, but my suggestion would be to do an underpainting with careful tonal work first. However the only reason i suggest this is because this is what I am doing.


However there are more that one way to skin a cat...


I hope you enjoy the painting. It is a great choice. Keep posting your progress please :-)

I got a bit more done today , i haven't done much to the face yet and already the mouth is proving to be difficult the eyes and nose also the three things that are key to this painting .

Slowly slowly i think anyway here is a update pic .

Very nice Hiker! you can work now with washes,it will help you to obtain her likeness ,Leonardo never used thick paint

Havnt tried doing a study and am tempted to try this now. Wonder if I could get this to fit on a 11x14 if I crop some of it.
