I think figgby ment that the values of shadows should be consistent as well as the values of midtone and highlights (that is how I read it anyway).

You have captured the essense of the flowers Illis..that's always important to me..The credible droop of the tulips the sparkling quality of the hydrangeas...I can understand how a darker background would bring out the subject..but I find the colours behind the vase pleasing and soothing to the eye..

Love your completed painting Illis...it must have been an interesting process..good feedback from all too.( ...Still I enjoyed the droopy tulips too as well! )
