Critique / Help please?

I am posting here as the Critique forum is broken & won't allow anyone to upload. Apologies, but maybe admin could move it to the right place?

I was asked to "trollify" a friend using a snapshot as a base image. I created this as a first attempt using GIMP. Could anyone with digital experience give me a few hints on how to improve it? Thanks.

Looks good, just a little blurry.

Hehe, that's a fun idea! I know next to nothing about GIMP and its capabilities, but a couple of general things. First I think you've got it pretty much right with the shape and character. It just needs perhaps a couple of tweaks:

His left ear (as in the left ear of the character, I'll use that view point) seems a little high, but if that's intentional for the trolly look, then don't mind me

The nose and mouth area could use more definition, especially more darks. In fact, a bit of oomph in the values wouldn't go amiss in general. Perhaps some slightly yellow-toned brighter highlights and a cooler pass over the darks.

Also consider your light source - it looks to me like it's coming from his top right, which means the shadow should be that bit more pronounced on the bottom left of the face and collar.

That's so helpful guys, thanks! I'm not sure how to mess with the levels yet, eek!

I think it's blurry because I was using smudge to blend some of my amateurish "brushstrokes". Do you think a layer over the top with some better defined edges might help?

Re: Critique / Help please?

Here's my base image, in case it helps. It was quite a crappy little snapshot taken with an old phone I'm afraid.

That would certainly help, that's the way I see a lot of digital artists work through their work anyway, by blocking in main colours and values then fine tuning later. I have to say I haven't prefected that method yet, but give it a go!

Layers are an amazing, simple tool, one of the main things I miss when working traditionally. Use them a lot! (but not too much, otherwise your file sizes will be huuuuuge!)
