I'm curious, and you didn't mention, what is this full-time job? Do you like it? The skills you learn at a job can help you in your art career depending on the job. You made it sound like this is your first full-time job in your life?
I agree with artyczar, however, if you want to be an artist, you've got to commit yourself. My advice would have been, to start out your full-time art career by moving to a place that has a large influx of tourists with money. This would also take care of criticism from family. Most holiday towns have a much stronger art market. I have several friends who make their living selling art to tourists. Those are about the only places you can make money from representational art consistently without being "well-known".
