Hi everyone ! Luke here. As a starting point, all C&C is super welcome!
I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube videos and some recommended doing an imprimatura (I call it underpainting but I want to sound bourgeois) and some recommended painting achromatically or monochromatically. One of them explained verdaccio and I was like hey, this looks cool! I like the way it looks, I think it imparts a statuesque quality on he subject.
Anyway here is (pic 1) a collage of my steps so far and (pic 2) my current standing with it as of posting…
I started the painting process today, the drawing I did a couple days ago and I transferred the drawing yesterday. Also note I completed a quick watercolour of the paper sketch which ill upload if you all want?? Anyway, the watercolour was helpful for me to see the shadows and so forth before I actually started painting.
Colour wise I’ve used tit white, lemon yellow and ivory? black for the verdaccio.
(Sorry, this post is getting very long)
Visually I can see at this point the facial expression is slightly more surprised than the reference, the hairline is higher and rounder and the jaw and lips are more withdrawn. Also, my hair lacks detail but I honestly am not that fussed. Later on I will go over it with a lighter colour for highlights (if I can be bothered lol).
EDIT: This is copied from my post in the oil forum so some parts might not be relevant for the portraiture peeps here!June 17, 2018 at 6:19 am #642450As a follow up, I’ve taken advice from my last posts of other art and taken a lot of care to soften edges and such! My eyebrows in the last painting were literal bricks of colour. I think this might be easier because of the monochromatic palette. 🎨
June 17, 2018 at 9:53 am #642449His left eye ( near us) is too close to the nostril wing.. needs to be moved to the right a bit.. the different expression may come from the brow shape in your painting rising and curving up a lot more than in your reference..

C&C always welcome.
