Chatsworth House

I tried this difficult subject, and was quite happy with the result until I tried to add all the violet plastic chairs around the courtyard. Then I tried to remove them, and was not very successful. From my own photo.

Amedeo 200g, A4, W&N paints.
C&C always welcome!

Re: Chatsworth House

There is so much to admire in this painting Tommy, like the figures which are not an easy subject to paint. Celebrate what you like and have achieved , take not on where you can improve and move on to the next one, it will come in time.

Re: Chatsworth House

Nice job Tommy. Your comments and the painting made me think about the opacity of watercolours. We often think of watercolour as a transparent medium. Transparency and watercolour seem to be synonomous but they actually aren't. For example all cadmium colours are opaque watercolours and the lighter brighter cadmiums can be use quite successfully over darker passages. So something like the chairs can be done over the darker background but the paint needs to be applied thickly. For me, my watercolour painting improved when I realized that what I wanted to capture wasn't always suited to a transparent approach.

As they say, for what it's worth.

Well your figure work is good Tommy; so sorry about the purple chairs not lifting for you.

Re: Chatsworth House

Thank you Joan, Doug, Stephanie, Rex, Katherine, Bill, Tosca, Pat and Darla, for your kind comments! I was quite happy with the figures, but very disappointed when I put in the chairs. But the main reason for the painting exercise was the figures, so I still in a good mood! Will try more figure painting, as they bring life into any landscape or streetscape painting!
