Re: giant pink ginger flower

Thanks Vena, I just hope I can get more layers down to create the look I want. If not its "start again" and usethe new brush which spreads the pencil better.

Re: giant pink ginger flower

I was visiting hubby in his "man cave" last night, and looking at his brushes. He has hard ones like those I bought and trimmed to make them even harder by removing the flexibility of the "hairs", but I discovered a very small size one he has, which he shaped round!

That never occurred to me, and it looks exactly like the head of a Microbrush...!

Re: giant pink ginger flower

Hi, well although I'm working on this nearly every day its going very, very slowly. I have made many layers already and find once the paper has rested its still taking more so that's good.
I'm thankful I have masses of ginger plants and sub-tropical foliage in my own garden because its hard to make out much of what's there. Still I'm quite happy with the process so far and just hope it continues to work out.
Any suggestions are always welcome.

Re: giant pink ginger flower

Slowly getting the darker greens in the background that I want to achieve but as it's all new to me its trial and error. So any suggestions with FC pencils will always be welcomed.

Re: giant pink ginger flower

Someone mentioned a "rule" here before, about having a light background for a dark subject, and a dark one for the main item, if its colour is light... The result of your amazing WIP shall be in the balance of both.

You don't want the background to have so much detail as to compete with the flower. It will be a lot of learning for you and your faithful viewers. Thank you for sharing...!

Re: giant pink ginger flower

yes Raquel you're absolutely right, before this I drew a flower or subject leaving the background the colour of the paper or did a complimentary halo surround BUT I felt it was time for me to learn more and try a busy background and face the flower issue later. I might just change the flower colour to its pale pink variety & if ts a disaster then at least I've learnt lots on creating different greens and complicated foliage.
Thanks for posting good to hear from you ☺☺

Re: giant pink ginger flower

Thanks for leaving a message of encouragement Dora, Vena & lisapencil. I've found some areas in this background that have to be changed so I hope I can erase and redo the layers without messing the tooth of the paper too much otherwise its "start all over" ho hum thats learning for you isnt it lol 😊😊

Re: giant pink ginger flower

Don't rush to change background items! Once you have the flower on the foreground you will "know" what is fighting with it, and simply darkening areas to eliminate details may be all it's needed!

After working on details it sounds sad, I know, but you will find what is more important, and feel comfortable about letting other parts take a real back space... (pun intended)

All that busyness on the background is entertaining now, but the main "centre of interest" is not there yet!!!

Good composition guides the eye in a specific path again and again, but it doesn't drive you nuts by getting you to look at EVERYTHING at the same time...

Re: giant pink ginger flower

My goodness this is taking forever......
Still plodding away working out whats what and slowly getting the foliage darker so ultimately the the flower will be the show piece. I hope so anyway..... at the moment it doesn't look like I've done much more but believe me I've been working on this most days for a few hours at a time!

Re: giant pink ginger flower

have now established the foliage on the top although still more finishing touches to do there. I will now go look at the lower left side and see what can be done there. I have found the OMS helpful but I haven't found you can use it many times like some artists say they do. I notice it can fur the tooth and make the pencils lay down little dots of wax/oil or whatever they now say is the binding agent.
Anyway learning lots and still enjoying the whole experience no matter what.
Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to all 🎄🎆🎄🎆

Re: giant pink ginger flower

You have tremendous patience. The foliage is coming along beautifully. Really like the touches of orange. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too.
